From 'staches to strikes: these kid reporters are getting personal with the Toronto Blue Jays

patch fans crosswise Canada feature been shouting on the Toronto blueness Jays during their post season run, Hugo, 10, and Meredith Fu, 8, have been working working tirelessly to bring Blue Jays fans the answers they really want to know about their favourite players.

“How long will you keep your moustache?” Meredith asked Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schneider last month in a video posted to the siblings' Instagram page.

“As long as we keep winning, I'm going to keep it for as long as that happens,” Schneider responded.

Throughout the team’s post-season run, the siblings have been among the lucky few to have been granted face-to-face interviews with Blue Jays stars, including ACLS MVP Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And pitcher Kevin Gausman.

And it hasn't just been Blue Jays players. The pair have interviewed stars from across the MLB.

"It's very fun," Meredith told As It Happens host Nil Koksal.

They’ve gotten players to open up about their game-winning strategies and share personal advice, even getting the scoop on learning from your failures from pitcher Chris Bassitt.

Meredith says that when she was five, while attending a Blue Jays game, the idea just came to her to interview the players. Then her parents wasted no time getting the ball rolling.

“I really wanted to talk to real life Blue Jays, and that's when I thought of interviewing,” she said.

The siblings have a routine down for interviewing the MLB’s biggest stars, including carefully fact-checking and preparing their questions the night before a game. They usually start by getting their notebooks out.

“We go onto their official app and click on every single name,” said Hugo.

“We go to the news section. If they have news we write that down, their number, their height, because a lot of MLB [players] look the same.”

It’s a dream come true getting to interview their heroes, they say. And it's a dream that keeps on going, now that the Blue Jays have made it to the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I’ve been basically waiting my whole life for this,” said the 10-year-old Hugo. “When they won … I swear I started levitating.”

Meredith says there's one interview with Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt that stands out to her the most.

“He said that people think failure is a bad thing, but when you look back into it, it helps you a lot,” said Meredith.

How will the Blue Jays do this in World Series? This Windsor super fan has a prediction

Hugo says he has some advice of his own for Bassitt and the rest of the players as they open the World Series, hoping to win it all for the first time since 1993.

“You and the rest of the guys on the team were built for this. This was your destiny,” said Hugo.

“You’ve all been working really hard for this, so I’d just say don’t give up. Even if you’re losing a game, don’t give up.”
