The Springer dinger becomes Blue Jays lore

#TheMoment Joe Carter showed up for a surprise slice of pie

Andrés Giménez was first up for Toronto in the fifth. He hit a fly ball to left-fielder Enrique Hernández for the first out of the inning.

That brought Springer back up, who grounded out.

Nathan Lukes followed up with another ground out.

That left the game tied at 1-1, through five innings.

Gausman got back-to-back strikeouts to start the fifth inning — first Max Muncy and then Enrique Hernández.

Tommy Edman then hit a long fly ball to Addison Barger to wrap up the Dodgers' half of the fifth.

It seems we may be in for a low-scoring affair as both the Blue Jays’ Gausman and the Dodgers’ Yamamoto look sharp through four innings.

Neither has been overly taxed, having thrown around 50 pitches each.

Gausman’s season-high pitch count was 107 in a July win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Yamamoto threw 111 pitches in his NLCS complete-game gem.

This one could be a nail-biter.

Hot-hitting Ernie Clement came to bat for Toronto to start the bottom of the fourth, but he quickly grounded out.

That brought Addison Barger, who hit a grand slam in Game 1, back to the plate. He hit a very long fly ball to centre field, giving the Dodgers two quick outs.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was up third. He grounded out to end the fourth.

The game remained tied at 1-1.

The Dodgers' Freddie Freeman hit a long fly ball to centre field, which Daulton Varsho caught to give Gausman, the Jays' starter, his first out in the top of the fourth.

Will Smith then hit a fly ball to Addison Barger in right field, which gave the Jays another quick out.

Teoscar Hernández, a former Blue Jay, was third up for the Dodgers. He struck out.

With the score unchanged, the game is tied 1-1.

Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, site of its city hall, still seems to be the place to be for the largest gathering of Jays fans

For the second night, the square is hosting a watch party, complete with a giant television screen.

The crowd’s larger than the night before, perhaps fuelled by the big victory and despite the cold weather (which seems to have an extra wind chill bite).

But most fans are bundled up, standing to view the game. Some are watching from provided chairs while others brought their own.

Wendy Lawrence said she decided to trek over here tonight, having just listened to Game 1 last night.

“It’s really hard to listen to baseball so I came somewhere where it’s free and the environment is fun.”

Daulton Varsho came to bat with two out immediately after Kirk's sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

But he grounded out, leaving the game tied ahead of the fourth inning.

The Blue Jays struck out less often than any other team in MLB during the regular season.

It’s a skill that comes in handy when there’s a runner on third with less than two outs, and you don’t necessarily need a hit to score a run.

That’s the exact situation in which Kirk just delivered, driving a sacrifice fly to centre field to score Springer and even things up.

Nathan Lukes came to bat after Springer was hit by a pitch. But he struck out, leaving Springer on base with one out.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Then hit a long single to left field, which allowed Springer to get to third.

Alejandro Kirk hit a sacrifice fly, which allowed Springer to make it home and tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

Yamamoto's first pitch of the third hit Springer, the Blue Jays designated hitter.

That put Springer on first base, with none out, to start the bottom of the inning.
