The science of a perfect home run

World Series history is full of heroes both unlikely and not, from Kirk Gibson to Joe Carter to David Freese to Freddie Freeman, just last year.

Someone will join that list in this Game 3, an instant classic if there ever was one.

Who will meet the moment?

Lauer's first opponent was Muncy, who hit a pop fly that Kiner-Falefa caught for the Jays' second out of the inning.

Teoscar Hernández then popped out, also to Kiner-Falefa, to send the 5-5 game to the 13th inning.

Little has not pitched since Game 5 of the ALCS, when he faced three batters, allowing the game-tying home run and two straight walks, both of whom came around to score.

The lefty was solid during the regular season, but he struggled down the stretch, especially with his command.

Barring the use of a starter, however, manager John Schneider might be forced to go to him if this game stretches long enough.

The lefty was never supposed to be here. He signed a minor-league deal with the Jays before the season, and midway through it he was thrust into the starting rotation.

Against all odds, the soft tosser thrived as the Blue Jays battled injuries. When they acquired Shane Bieber, though, Lauer lost his job.

He’s barely pitched in these playoffs.

Now, he’ll be tasked with recording the biggest outs of the season.

Fisher struck out the Dodgers' Smith to start off the bottom of the 12th inning.

The Jays have now brought in Eric Lauer to try to carry the game into yet another extra inning.

No matter how this one ends, it will go down in World Series lore.

Seemingly every play has been riveting in its own way — all the way down to Edman’s play to scoop the ball with his glove to first to send the game to the top of the 12th as the Blue Jays left the bases loaded.

Kershaw came in to face Lukes — again with the bases loaded and two out, in the top of the 12th.

They got to a full count. Lukes hit two fouls, then, on the eighth pitch, he hit a ground ball that and Dodgers were able to get him at first.

That sent the 5-5 ballgame into the bottom of the 12th inning.

Schneider came up with two out, and Blue Jays runners on first and second base, amid a 5-5 tie game, in the top of the 12th.

He worked to a full count with Sheehan, then hit a ball to Muncy, which saw all of the Jays running safe.

The Dodgers then went to Clayton Kershaw to try to stop the trouble, with the bases loaded, and two out, in the top of the 12th.

Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer started this game on the mound.

Now, with the bases loaded in the 12th inning, fellow three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw will enter in a critical spot.

The 37-year-old has said this will be his last season. Like Scherzer, Kershaw is past his prime — and on a Dodgers team with a stacked rotation, he’s been relegated to the bullpen for the playoffs.

Now, he has the chance to author one more iconic moment in Dodger blue.

Blue Jays shortstop Giménez has had a nice post-season, but he’s hardly some feared hitter. He is batting ninth, after all.

Yet Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave him a free pass to bring Davis Schneider — objectively a better hitter, though a righty against his right-handed pitcher Sheehan is perhaps a better matchup — to the plate.

Schneider responded with an RBI single to load the bases.
