Some fans have questioned the umpire’s “dead ball” call after Addison Barger hit a ball that lodged itself between the outfield wall and the turf (They argue that had the umpire not made that call, the Jays would have been in a much stronger position to win Game 6).
Yet a lot of fans at Rogers Centre felt the umpire made the right decision and it was just a bad break for the Jays.
“It’s the correct call. It’s 100 per cent the correct call,” said Lorne Yuffe. “I’ve played baseball for years and I know the rules.”
“Unfortunately that’s the way the cookie crumbles.”
Ben Sherman also agreed with the call, saying it was disappointing but a rule is a rule.
“I think it was the right call,” he said. “It’s unbelievable how those types of things that you’ve never seen before happen in that moment.”
In the bottom of the first inning of Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, Houston Astros outfielder George Springer stepped into the batter’s box to face Washington Nationals starter Max Scherzer.
Springer flied out to centre field. Now, he’s teammates with Scherzer — and once again, he’ll lead off while Scherzer starts a World Series Game 7.
This is actually Springer’s third winner-takes-championship game, having also played in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series against the Dodgers.
We’ll find out soon if that big-game experience pays off.
At Rogers Centre, Jays fans weighed in on tonight’s starting pitching matchup: Jays veteran Max Scherzer versus two-way Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.
“I’m not scared of Ohtani,” said Andrae Anglin. “Max at this stage [you] don’t know if he’ll be on or off. He knows how big this game is. I think he’s going to give it all that he has.”
Rob Convery said he thinks Scherzer has the advantage because he’s pitched in this kind of situation before (Scherzer started Game 7 of the 2019 World Series).
As for Ohtani, Convery thinks George Springer “is going to light up Ohtani on his first pitch.”
J.J Anderson said he believes the Jays hitters will be able to get to Ohtani, although he does have some concerns about Scherzer because of where he is in his career.
“But if he’s like he’s been for most of the playoffs, I’m pretty sure it will be a fun matchup.”
As for fan Matt Black, he summed up the matchup succinctly: “I love Scherzer. Mad Max!”
Who will win tonight? I have no idea.
This I’m certain of: Toronto is ready to erupt if the Blue Jays pull it off. Jays logos are everywhere downtown right now and fans have flooded the core. The Leafs’ and Raptors’ seasons have started, but make no mistake, it’s a baseball city right now.
Scherzer came trotting out to the bullpen, looking focused as ever. And all of a sudden — still over a half-hour from first pitch — this place got loud.
The 41-year-old didn’t acknowledge the crowd. He simply placed his glove on the field, and began warming up for the biggest game of the season.
Calling Mad Max "locked in" is an understatement. 😳 pic.twitter.com/9LvoemG0w3
The Blue Jays right-fielder has become a main character of this World Series, from his pinch-hit grand slam in Game 1 to his lodged ball and base-running blunder last night.
Thanks to his strong .467 batting average this series, Schneider bumped him to fifth in the batting order while moving Daulton Varsho to seventh.
Will the moment come to him again? And can he deliver one night after a wild finish to Game 6?
Tim Buchanan is certainly an example of why the Jays have been dubbed “Canada’s team.”
Buchanan flew from his hometown in New Brunswick to be in Toronto tonight.
“This is unbelievable. It’s something that may never happen again in my lifetime so we had to be here,” he said.
Jeremy Seitz said he came from Saskatchewan to watch the Jays win the World Series tonight.
The Jays will obviously take it tonight, he said, mostly because of their hitting.
“We’ve been fans for a long time,” he said. “Came here with the hopes they’re going to win and we believe they’re going to win.”
“If we didn’t believe it we wouldn’t be here from Saskatchewan.”
Jays' Ernie Clement: 'My favourite team I've ever been a part of'
Blue Jays utility infielder Ernie Clement was asked at a news conference before Game 7 how he would want this Jays team to be defined. He highlighted the team's close-knit nature, saying, 'You get to play with 30 of your best friends.'
If you don’t already love Ernie Clement, may I present this absolute gem of a quote:
“No matter how tonight goes this is the most fun I’ve ever had playing baseball,” he told reporters ahead of Game 7.
It feels like Clement has played this entire season with a smile on his face (perhaps except for that stretch where he kept getting hit by pitches).
He’s also on a 12-game post-season hitting streak. One more and he’ll break the Jays’ franchise record.
Guerrero came to tonight’s game wearing a Team Canada Marie-Philip Poulin jersey.
Poulin, of course, is among the most clutch Canadian athletes of all time — she has won Olympic gold three times, and scored the game-winner in each of those gold medal games.
She also just so happens to be at Game 7 tonight. And you bet she made sure to secure herself a Guerrero jersey.
Confirmed: Marie-Philip Poulin will be wearing a Vladimir Guerrero Jr jersey at Game 7 tonight. (I gave her mine) pic.twitter.com/8bLBnN0tM4
The last game of the season means everybody is available to play.
Yes, even Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw six innings last night.
On the Jays’ side, manager John Schneider has said rookie Trey Yesavage is “definitely” in the plan. We will likely also see Game 4 starter Shane Bieber, in addition to the full complement of relievers.
The mantra for both managers in this game? No stone left unturned.
