Roughrider fans hit the streets in Regina to celebrate their Grey Cup victory

Hunter Wessing from Pense, Sask., is in the crowd with a drum chanting, “Let’s go Riders!”

The 12-year-old is missing school to attend the parade and see his favourite player, A.J. Ouellette.

“It felt insane. I was crying so much,” Wessing said of the win.

I’m normally the legislative reporter here in Saskatchewan and 2 p.m. CST is when question period gets underway at the legislature.

The Saskatchewan Party and the NDP both say they are expecting an abbreviated schedule.

Like many others in Regina, the politicians want to be at the parade.

Riders fans are starting to gather outside the legislature, some of them dressed head to toe in green and white.

Maranda Foster, who drove here from Qu’Appelle, Sask., is in the crowd after attending the Grey Cup in Winnipeg. She said she dyed her hair green after the Riders' 2013 win, and kept it that way ever since.

“It means a lot to them, I know a couple of them personally,” Foster said of the team.

“Getting to celebrate with them is a big deal.”

Hey Rider fans, I'm Adam Hunter, host of The Morning Edition. I was lucky enough to cover the Grey Cup in Winnipeg and I've attended the most recent Grey Cup parades and rallies.

Today will be tropical compared to previous rallies.

Conditions in both 2007 and 2013 were frigid. But that did not stop fans from lining the streets. In 2007, the Riders brought the cup inside the legislative building and did their speeches from the rotunda.

Back in 1989, an estimated 18,000 fans crowded into Taylor Field at night as Bob Poley and Roger Aldag walked the Grey Cup into the stadium.

I'm looking forward to hearing from always-colourful coach Corey Mace and Grey Cup MVP Trevor Harris, who will likely be hearing MVP chants as he did at the rally on Monday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

The forecast today calls for a balmy high of 5 C but the same can’t be said for previous parades.

The last parade on Nov. 26, 2013, saw a high of –6 C. According to data from Environment Canada and the National Weather Service, there was already between eight and 16 centimetres of snow on the ground that day.

The parade on Nov. 27, 2007, saw blowing snow, adding to the two to five centimetres already on the ground. The wind made the high of –16 C feel closer to –30 C that day, according to the Regina Leader-Post.

Of course, this year’s parade is about a week earlier than the two previous events. Temperatures for next week in Regina show below-freezing daytime highs and the possibility of accumulating snow.

The Green Mile, which starts at the intersection of Albert Street and Victoria Avenue, has become an important part of Saskatchewan Roughriders lore.

It was first dubbed the Green Mile after fans gathered to celebrate the team’s 2007 Grey Cup championship victory.

I'll be starting at the Green Mile at Albert and Victoria, where fans were celebrating Sunday. The parade trucks are expected to pass by here on their way to the legislature.

This is the fifth time that the Riders have won the Grey Cup, but it's the first time they defeated the Montreal Alouettes in the three times they met at the biggest game in the CFL.

Expect a large celebration along the Green Mile as the parade gets underway shortly.

The Roughriders went 12-6 during the regular season, securing the top of the West Division and punching their ticket into the CFL post-season.

They defeated the red-hot B.C. Lions 24-21 in the Western Final in Regina, then rumbled into Winnipeg to take on the Montreal Alouettes.

Riders defeat Alouettes 25-17 to win 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have defeated the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 to win the Grey Cup for the first time since 2013. It's their fifth Grey Cup title in its 112-year history.

The Riders ended the first quarter of Sunday’s Grey Cup trailing 7-1 to the Montreal Alouettes but dominated the rest of the game by scoring 24 unanswered points.

Although the Alouettes attempted to battle back in the fourth quarter, a fumble on the goal line all but ended their hopes and the final score was 25-17.
