In comments ahead of Witkoff's arrival, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his troops had captured the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine.
Putin called it an important victory, but the Ukrainian military said its forces still held the northern part of the city.
"I want to thank you. This is an important direction. We all understand just how important," Putin told the army's top brass in a video that had a Sunday time stamp but was released by the Kremlin on Monday. According to Reuters, this suggests it was timed to show that Russia was advancing on the battlefield before Witkoff's arrival.
Today, U.S. Special envoy Steve Witkoff is in Russia to discuss how to end the war in Ukraine.
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, is also there. He and Witkoff flew out of Miami and landed in Moscow earlier this morning, according to Reuters.
The U.S. Delegation met with Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday, at a golf course developed by Witkoff. There, they discussed the U.S.'s proposed peace plan — which started out at 28 points in mid-November and is said to have been whittled down by the Ukrainians since then.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said a key sticking point for his country is the question of territory. The U.S.'s initial proposal included Ukraine giving up the Donbas region along the Ukraine-Russia border.
