How much U.S. Trade can Canada shift to other countries?

Trump and Carney have sat down in the very gold Oval Office.

The president said he’s liked Carney from the beginning, but added there are natural conflicts.

He said they will work on it.

Trump’s first words in the Oval Office: “It's an honour to have the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, who I have made very popular.”

Reporters who will be going into the Oval Office have now lined up outside the door.

Once Trump and Carney are ready, the doors will open and reporters will flood in.

There is a lot of interest from news networks around the world. Reporters will jockey for the best position to try and ask questions of the leaders. It usually gets kinda hectic.

Doug Ford spoke to American audiences on CNN earlier this morning — and he just addressed a scrum of Canadian reporters in Toronto.

“There has to be a point that, if Prime Minister Carney can’t get a deal, we have to start hitting back. We need to hit back hard,” said Ford.

The federal government began quietly removing its counter-tariffs on U.S. Goods in August, with the exception of the aluminum, steel and auto industries. Trump, meanwhile, has recently imposed more duties on softwood lumber and furniture.

“We can’t just keep rolling over for President Trump. As he strengthens his case, we seem to be weakening our case by continuously pulling off tariffs,” the premier said.

Ford has been cheering Carney on since he was elected. But he showed some signs of impatience today.

“Maybe Prime Minister Carney knows something I don’t know. And if that’s the case, he should sit down with the premiers and explain that,” Ford said.

The prime minister has arrived at the White House.

Trump greeted Carney at the door with a handshake and pleasantries that the mic didn’t pick up.

The two leaders are expected to discuss trade and security — but meetings with this president can be volatile.

Next stop: the Oval Office, which has become a thunderdome of sorts for world leaders. Will Trump use the often unwieldy Q&A period to bash Carney? Or will the Canadian escape unscathed like he managed during his May visit?

Don’t be at all surprised if issues other than tariffs come up during the Oval Office meeting.

For instance, Trump may want to crow about his peace deal for Gaza.

Brian Clow, a senior adviser on Canada-U.S. Relations to former prime minister Justin Trudeau, says Carney needs to be prepared for Trump publicly criticizing him over Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state.

He said these Oval Office meetings “tend to go all over the place.”

Clow’s recommendation to Carney: “Pull the conversation back to what you want to be talking about, and in this case it’s trade and tariffs.”

Carney recently had a one-on-one interview with fellow economist Zanny Minton Beddoes, the editor-in-chief of U.K. Magazine The Economist.

Minton Beddoes, in asking Carney what it’s like to deal with Trump, said that the U.S. President’s administration has a “mafioso economic policy.”

The prime minister demurred. “He has a view that you measure economic success in trade — just like you measure success in business — of whether or not you have positive cash flow.”

Trump has repeatedly accused American trading partners — including Canada — of “cheating” the U.S. On trade.

“And so for him, running a trade surplus is a sign of success, and if you’re running a deficit, you by definition are either being ripped off or you’re not as successful as you need to be,” Carney said. “We take a different view.”

Canadian reporters are lined up outside the West Wing.

Once the Trump administration gives the signal, Carney will depart Blair House and make his way across the street to the White House.

Typically, world leader meetings here have started later than scheduled. We are hearing Carney is delayed by about 15 minutes.

Only two world leaders have been granted multiple one-on-one Oval Office meetings with Trump so far in the president’s second term.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is by far the most frequent visitor. He was the first foreign leader in the Oval following Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, was back a second time in early April, a third for a closed-door meeting in July and then a fourth just last week to announce Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the other, first for a humiliating meeting in February that he would likely rather forget, then a far more conciliatory visit in August.

Carney’s first meeting with Trump in the Oval Office came in May.

The Mexican president said during her morning news conference that she may have to phone Trump over the 25 per cent tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty trucks he announced Monday.

Sheinbaum said that while the tariffs apply to all countries, they have a disproportionate impact on Mexico and her government is in touch with industry stakeholders.

“If it’s necessary, it may require a personal call with President Trump,” she said.

She said the government is still hopeful it can reach a deal with the U.S. On tariffs before they’re set to rise on Nov. 1.
