SHibu Soren, JMM supremo, and former Chief government government minister of Jharkhand, passed aside at the eld of 81, his boy and chief minister Hemant Soren announced on Monday. The JMM leader had been undergoing treatment for over a month at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he was placed on ventilator support.He was admitted in the last week of June with complications related to a kidney ailment, hospital sources said.Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village in Ramgarh district (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand), Shibu Soren was the son of the late Shobaran Soren. At age 15, he lost his father in an alleged attack by moneylenders, the incident left a lasting impression and became the catalyst for his political journey, reported news agency PTI.He completed his matriculation from Gola High School in Hazaribagh and rose from a modest background to become a prominent tribal leader and a central figure in Jharkhand's political circles.He married Roopi Soren on January 1, 1962. The couple had four children—three sons and a daughter. His eldest son, Durga Soren, passed away in 2009 while, daughter Anjani leads the party's Odisha unit. His youngest son Basant Soren is an MLA.His son, Hemant Soren is currently serving as Jharkhand’s chief minister and continues to be a leading figure in the JMM. Mourning the loss of his father, Hemat wrote on ‘X’, “Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all. Today, I feel completely empty.”Shibu Soren's death marks the end of a political era that saw the rise of tribal assertion and the creation of a separate Jharkhand state. Known widely as ‘Dishom Guru’ (leader of the land), Soren played a pivotal role in reshaping regional and national politics through his relentless advocacy for tribal rights.JMM founderSoren co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1973 along with trade unionist AK Roy and Binod Bihari Mahto at a public meeting in Dhanbad. Under his leadership, JMM quickly became the principal political force advocating for a separate tribal state, gaining strong support in the Chotanagpur and Santhal Pargana regions.His mobilisation of tribal communities against feudal exploitation elevated him to iconic status among Adivasi populations. After decades of agitation led by Soren and others, the demand for a separate state was fulfilled with the formation of Jharkhand on November 15, 2000.Political careerSoren’s political journey began with his election to the Seventh Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka, a seat he represented multiple times. He also served as a Rajya Sabha MP from June 2020 and was appointed a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in October 2024.In state politics, Soren served as Jharkhand’s chief minister three times—briefly from March 2 to 11, 2005; from August 27, 2008 to January 12, 2009; and from December 30, 2009 to May 31, 2010. Each tenure was cut short by unstable coalition dynamics.At the national level, he held the Union Coal Ministry portfolio during UPA-1 across three stints between 2004 and 2006. However, his time in the central cabinet was marred by legal troubles.Controversies and court battlesIn 2004, an arrest warrant was issued against Soren in connection with the 1975 Chirudih massacre case, prompting him to go underground briefly. He was arrested, spent time in custody, and later re-inducted into the Cabinet after securing bail. He was acquitted in March 2008.In another high-profile case, Soren was convicted in November 2006 in the 1994 kidnapping and murder of his former secretary, Shashinath Jha, reported PTI.The CBI had alleged that Jha was killed to silence him over a political payoff during the 1993 no-confidence vote against the Narasimha Rao government. Soren was later acquitted, and the Supreme Court upheld his acquittal in April 2018.Survived assassination attemptSoren survived an assassination attempt in June 2007 when explosives were hurled at his convoy near Deoghar while he was being escorted to jail. Despite the volatility of his political environment, his influence remained unshaken.He led the JMM as its president for 38 years until April 2025, when he became its founding patron.
