Putin says decision to meet with Trump was mutual

I'm here in Anchorage, Alaska, with our colleague Lyndsay Duncombe.

We've been asking locals what this meeting means to them. One resident, Liz Betchol, told us: "I think it's crap, honestly. Also the fact that they're not even bringing Ukraine into it. It's kind of like it just seems like you're going behind someone's back to do things. It just seems sneaky."

Trump and Putin will be meeting at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

Trump's announcement that he would host an American adversary on U.S. Soil broke with expectations that they would meet in a neutral third country. Alaska was likely chosen as something of a midpoint between Moscow and Washington, and experts say the base is the only location in the state with robust security capable of hosting the two leaders.

The U.S. Purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, and its air force arrived during the Second World War when Elmendorf Air Force Base became a critical location for the U.S. Army. During the Cold War, the U.S. Used the base to monitor Soviet activity. Elmendorf merged with Fort Richardson in 2010.

The base is located about 15 kilometres from downtown Anchorage, a city of 290,000.

Good afternoon. I'm a senior writer covering the meeting from our national desk today.

This will be the first summit of the U.S. And Russian leaders since Putin and then-U.S. President Joe Biden met in Geneva in June 2021 — months before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It comes came despite Trump’s recent threats of sanctions against Russia, having expressed frustration for weeks that Putin wasn’t doing more to quell the fighting. That was a change of tone for Trump, who has often been friendly toward Russia.

John Herbst, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, predicts that U.S. President Donald Trump understands it will 'take time to make peace happen.' This comes after Trump announced he would be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Russia President Vladimir Putin in Alaska today for their first face-to-face meeting in six years as the American leader tries to bring the violent war in Ukraine to an end.

Trump famously promised on the campaign trail to settle the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of his return to office — a quip he later said was made "in jest" as it became apparent there was no easy way to stop the hostilities.

This meeting with Putin is Trump's attempt to make good on that commitment to stop the fighting once and for all, although foreign policy experts doubt anything meaningful will be announced after a single meeting.

We will be covering the summit live on this page throughout this day, with colleagues in Washington and Alaska.
