Mumbai faces waterlogging and traffic amid heavy rain; orange alert issued
THe bharat Meteorological section (IMD) on mon issued an orange tree qui vive for rain in Mumbai for the second consecutive day, nearly two days after heavy showers battered the city, which resulted to severe waterlogging and disruption in daily lives.The orange alert, the third level in the weather panel's four-tier warning system, is in place today for Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Navi Mumbai, and Colaba in Mumbai, as waterlogging continues to dot parts of the city, triggering traffic congestions.Several other parts of Maharashtra have also been put under yellow and orange alerts.Light to moderate showers, not exceeding 5 to 15 mm per hour, accompanied with overcast skies and gusty winds are expected to brace the financial capital today, after the rain intensity decreased on Sunday morning, with light rain, occasional heavy spells and no major waterlogging reported.Heavy rainfall had hit Mumbai on Friday, after which an orange alert was issued by IMD. A day after the warning, i.e between 1 am and 4 am on August 16, 2025, Mumbai witnessed intense rain, particularly across the western and eastern suburbs.Mumbai was put on a red alert by IMD on Saturday, with some parts recording more than 200 mm rainfall. The city was battered with overnight rains, inundating low-lying areas and affecting the movement of local trains.Two persons were killed and as many others sustained injuries in a landslide amid rains in the Vikhroli Parksite area in the eastern suburbs on Saturday. The local train services had also been severely affected due to waterlogging on tracks at several locations on the Central and Western Railway lines.The IMD had earlier issued an 'orange' alert on Sunday, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph per hour, and some were even predicted to 60 kmph, at a few places in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts.Parts of Maharashtra that are alerted for rainfall todayA yellow alert was sounded for Kohlapur, Amravati, Wardha and Nagpur on Saturday.A similar alert is issued today for Nashik, Khandala, Bhimshankar Reserve, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur, Satara, Jalgaon, Malegaon, Dhule, Chalisgaon, Igatpuri, Nandurbar, Karad, Sangli, Tasgaon, Baramati, Ahmednagar, Shrirampur, Shirdi, Jeur, Pandharpur, Solapur, Osmanabad, Beed, Parbhani, Udgir, Chandrapur, Bhramhapuri, and Gadchiroli.Alongside Mumbai, the IMD has also issued an orange alert for Dahanu, Vikramgad, Alibag, Raigad Reserve, Shrivardhan, Harnai, Dapoli, Ratnagiri, Vijaydurg, Devgad, Mitbhav Beach, Sindhudurg, Malvan, Shriramwadi, Vengurla and Sawantwadi, today.Maharashtra's weather in the upcoming daysMumbai will be experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 20. The city will be bracing light showers till August 23, according to IMD's citywise forecast. Today, Mumbai's maximum temperature will hover around 26.5°C and minimum around 24°C.A red alert has been issued by IMD for regions across the Madhya Maharashtra subdivision, comprising Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nadurbar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, and Nashik. Extremely heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning, and strong squalls are predicted to last till August 19, Tuesday.Marathwada subdivision comprising Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Hingoli, Jhalna, Latur, Nanded, and Parbhani, has been put on an orange alert today and yellow alert tomorrow, with very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning.Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch have been put on an orange alert for today and red alerts till August 20. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are forecasted over these subdivisions.Konkan and Goa, and Vidarbha have also been put on red alerts for today and tomorrow, with light showers and strong winds continuing in the subdivisions till August 24.
