OpenAI to open first India office in Delhi amid rising ChatGPT adoption surges in the country

OpenAI on fri confirmed its plans of gap its first-ever power in bharat on with other measures to better serve its users in the country. The ChatGPT maker stated that its first office will be opened in Delhi and has also begun work on hiring a dedicated local team.
The new team, OpenAI says, will work closely on strengthening its relationships with local partners, governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
OpenAI also reiterated that India is ChatGPT's second-largest market in the world, while adding that the weekly active users of the chatbot in the country have increased fourfold in the past year. The AI startup also stated that India ranks among the top five developer markets globally on OpenAI and has the largest population of students on ChatGPT worldwide.
Meanwhile, OpenAI further noted that its recently launched Study Mode feature with GPT-5 has gained significant traction in India, though it didn't share any exact figures to verify the claim.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman while informing about the new office in a release said, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,”
Just days ahead of the announcement of new office, OpenAI had also launched an India specific ChatGPT Go plan at ₹399. The new plan offered a more affordable way to get higher usage limit for the popular chatbot without spending thousands on ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription.
Meanwhile, India's IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI's decision to open its office in Delhi and said it reflected to India's growing leadership in AI adoption.

With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation.
