THe Income assess section on sun dismissed claims virtually extending the deadline for filing Income assess Returns beyond September 15. Addressing the fake news being circulated on social media, it said that “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.”Income Tax department took to their X handle to clarify that the news circulating about the deadline extension to 30 September is fake. In its post, the I-T department said that fake messages were being circulated suggesting that the deadline, originally due on July 31, 2025 and later extended to September 15, 2025, had been pushed to September 30.It further advised taxpayers to rely only on the official Income Tax India account for updates. The fake notice cites the system readiness and concerns raised by the stakeholders as the reason for the extension.Earlier, the deadline for filing ITR was extended from July 31 to September 15 after there were several technical issues reported while filing, including portal glitches and data mismatches.On Saturday, the I-T department had shared that over 6 crore ITRs had already been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26. In an X post, it thanked taxpayers and tax professionals for their contribution in reaching this milestone."Thank you, taxpayers & tax professionals, for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file at the earliest to avoid last last-minute rush. Let's continue this momentum!" the department had said in a post on X.With Monday marked as the final day to file ITR, the department has been reminding taxpayers to file before the deadline and avoid penalties.
