Why are politicians allowed to switch parties?

Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority government has become a majority thanks to a projected Liberal win in University-Rosedale.

A win gives the Liberals 172 seats in the House of Commons, bringing the government assurance that it would survive any confidence votes in the House.

Results are still coming in Scarborough Southwest, another Toronto riding the Liberals won comfortably in last year's federal election, and Terrebonne, which they won by a single vote.

Getting to a majority is a historic achievement for Carney and the Liberals, particularly given the prime minister was a private citizen 16 months ago and the Liberals were polling 20 points behind the Conservatives.

This changes how the House operates and cements the Liberals' grip on power for three years with the next election scheduled for October 2029.

The crowd keeps growing here in Scarborough Southwest as votes get counted. Supporters are standing close together, at times with little room to move around.

A few notable faces have made appearances.

Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MP for Beaches-East York, is milling about in the crowd as well as MPP Andrea Hazell from neighbouring riding Scarborough-Guildwood.

Qadira Jackson, who previously ran against Begum as the provincial Liberal candidate for Scarborough Southwest, is also here.

The room is starting to fill up now at the Liberal headquarters in Terrebonne and the tension is palpable. Ministers, MPs and bystanders are watching every decimal point movement closely as the results come in for this riding.

The mood was initially unchanged after several news outlets called a majority — because all of the TVs here happened to be off when the call happened.

At the Bloc headquarters, a giant screen shows live updates from Elections Canada. People are standing in front and closely watching the results.

The margin is tight between the Liberals and the Bloc. Every time the numbers creep into Bloc territory, people cheer and burst into a chant.

"Nathalie, Nathalie, Nathalie…"

The Liberals may have their majority, but for now it's razor thin.

Because a Liberal MP, Francis Scarpaleggia, sits as the Speaker of the House of Commons and doesn't vote unless there is a tie, getting to 173 (or more) seats would give them a more steady hold on the House agenda. That means they'd love to secure one of the other two seats up for grabs tonight.

Nearly a year after the general election, the Liberals appear to have secured a (narrow) majority government.

We're almost an hour past polls closing, but results are still just trickling in. We have fewer than a dozen polls reporting in each riding.

'It's going to be a long night' in tight Terrebonne byelection, Joly says

Liberal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is in Terrebonne and just spoke with our colleague Raffy Boudjikanian.

She said she helped Auguste canvas voters in the riding a few times and struck an optimistic tone about how the vote will go tonight.

"It's going to be a long night but I think we did some really good work," Joly said, adding that the Liberals were pushing a message to voters that they can deliver stability.

"Things are — I think —  going well, but I don't want to take anything for granted."

Supporters for Begum are now showing up at the banquet hall in Scarborough Southwest.

Pop music is echoing from the speakers and chatter is bouncing off the walls as a stream of supporters arrive. Some of them are holding Canadian flags.

Campaign workers are doing some final touches before the waiting game begins.

On the stage, a picture of Begum's late husband, Rizuan Rahman, is on the podium. Begum has previously credited her husband for getting her into politics.

There's also a smaller but noticeable presence in uniformed black vests: security.

It's 8:30 p.m. ET, meaning polls have closed in the three federal byelection ridings. We now wait for the results to trickle in. Giddy-up.
