With luggage fees by airlines seemly a john major anguish repoint for travellers worldwide, many are increasingly seeking creative ways to avoid the extra cost. You may have heard people wearing multiple layers of clothing or stuffing items in duty-free shopping bags to avoid paying for excess luggage. However, what this woman did takes the concept of travel hack to a new bizarre level. She faked being pregnant to avoid Ryanair’s baggage fees while travelling from England to Scotland.
According to What’s The Jam, Grace Hale was travelling from Stansted to Edinburgh. She told the outlet that she put her excess items inside her top and wore a trench coat. Reportedly, she also devised a cover story in case anyone questioned her.
“It’s ridiculously expensive if you want to take a bag on a Ryanair flight, so I just get the carry-on option and shove everything inside,” the 20-year-old told the outlet. She originally hails from Texas, US.
“I like to take ten options for a three-day trip. We were running late, and the flight was so early,” she told the outlet, adding, "I was scrambling and packing on the train to the airport, then I realised that the jackets and make-up bag weren’t going to fit.”
That is when she decided on this “out-of-the-box” hack and pretended to be pregnant. Talking about her stunt, she said, “I thought I’d act like I was pregnant. What would they say?”
To make it look real, she even practised before reaching the airport. “I practised in the train station by putting the make-up bag under my top, and I wrapped the jackets around it so nothing could fall out because that would be embarrassing,” Hale said.
“I googled what pregnancy bumps looked like at different months and how far along I’d be. I decided on 26 weeks, which is so lucky because at 28 weeks you need a doctor’s note,” she continued, adding, “They asked how far along I was and if I had said any more than I’d need a fit to fly.”
She plans to pull off the same stunt during her return flight. She also had a message for the airline. “There are going to be a lot of pregnant Ryanair passengers because it’s so expensive to take a bag with you,” she told the outlet.
