Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan's army chief and an important figure in mediation efforts, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to try to prevent a renewal of the conflict after talks in Islamabad that ended without a deal.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Thursday the trip had led to greater hopes for a second round of talks and an extension of a two-week ceasefire, but said fundamental differences remain over its nuclear program.
U.S. President Donald Trump says a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET today, following six weeks of renewed fighting with Hezbollah that has killed thousands and displaced more than a million people.
The announcement comes after rare direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington earlier this week, though neither side has yet confirmed the deal or released details.
"I just had excellent conversations with the Highly Respected President Joseph Aoun, of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE at 5 P.M. EST."
