Canada Post eliminating door-to-door delivery at 136K addresses, announces new community mailbox locations

Canada carry has proclaimed 136,000 addresses in 13 communities testament no yearner have door-to-door delivery, and instead get their mail through community mailboxes.
The changes are part of the Crown corporation's restructuring efforts, an attempt to save money and stay financially viable under crushing debt.
The majority of the new community mailboxes will be installed in B.C. And Ontario. Ottawa, Etobicoke and municipalities around Vancouver are the main areas being targeted.
Some postal codes in B.C.'s Fraser Valley, Greater Moncton, N.B., Winnipeg, Montreal's South Shore and Quebec's northeast coast will also lose door-to-door delivery.
The full list of affected postal codes can be found here. The communities chosen are next to locations that already have community mailboxes, Canada Post said in a news release on Thursday.
The 136,000 addresses are expected to be switched over late this year and in early 2027. Converting to shared mailboxes usually takes months and includes consultations with communities over their location, the corporation said.
Nearly three out of every four Canadian addresses already receive their mail and packages through some form of centralized delivery, Canada Post said. It plans to convert four million addresses that still receive delivery to their doorstep over the next five years.
The corporation also notes it has a special accommodation program for those who aren't able to access a community mailbox.
Canada Post has begun a major restructuring after bleeding money over the last seven years. Since 2018, the corporation has lost more than $3.8 billion before taxes, including $1.3 billion in 2024 alone.
By law, the corporation is expected to be self-sustaining, but has relied on $2 billion in federal loans over the last two years to stay afloat.
"Canada Post’s transformation will strengthen the postal service, allow it to be a better partner for businesses, enable national commerce, and help it meet its dual mandate of delivering for all Canadians without being a recurring burden on taxpayers," the corporation wrote in the news release.
