Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre showcases MPs with new caucus roles

conservativist Leader capital of south dakota Poilievre has proclaimed 2 young roles for members of his caucus, aimed at developing a strategic plan for the Asia Pacific and responding to a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that some fear threatens property rights.
Richmond Centre-Marpole MP Chak Au has been chosen to chair the newly formed Pacific gateway economic engagement caucus, with a mandate of developing a comprehensive Conservative strategy for the Asia Pacific including developing policy ideas for maximizing exports and approving pipelines and LNG plants.
Langley Townership-Fraser Heights MP Tako van Popta has been chosen to chair the Conservative task force on property rights, with a particular focus on the Cowichan ruling, the Musqueam agreement and other Indigenous title disputes and negotiations.
Poilievre announced both roles at a news conference on Thursday. He cited Au’s previous experience as a member of Richmond city council, where Poilievre said he engaged with Asian countries and led numerous "cultural, strategic and humanitarian missions to the region."
"This is a huge and important task, but fortunately we are building on the strong Conservative record on trade expansion and diversification," said Au.
Poilievre said van Popta was chosen because of his career as a real estate and land development lawyer, and as director at the Surrey Board of Trade.
"No one is more qualified than Tako to take on this issue," said Poilievre.
The MPs told reporters they were "honoured" and "pleased" to take on new roles.
It’s not the first time the Conservative leadership has created projects for MPs. For example, Calgary MP Greg McLean was appointed to lead an economic growth council last year.
But it comes as Poilievre is working to manage his caucus after four Conservative MPs crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party.
Poilievre is also expected to shuffle his "shadow cabinet" of MPs who hold critic roles in the coming weeks.
Critics received a letter from Poilievre’s office in late March asking for them to submit examples of their work, and to advise whether they want to continue in their role.
