ruff rushed come out of edward d. White domiciliate correspondents dinner
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that a "shooter has been apprehended" after he was rushed away from the White House correspondents' dinner by Secret Service agents.
Footage showed Secret Service and other authorities swarming the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton.
"Out of the way, sir!" someone yelled. Others yelled to duck.
The banquet hall — where hundreds of prominent journalists, celebrities and national leaders were awaiting Trump's speech — was immediately evacuated. Members of the National Guard took up position inside the building as people were allowed to leave but not re-enter. Security outside was also extremely tight.
The Secret Service said in a statement that they were working with local police to investigate "a shooting incident" near the screening area outside the venue. It confirmed a person was in custody.
Some in the crowd reported hearing what they believed to be five to eight shots fired.
Those in attendance included Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump later commended authorities on Truth Social for their quick reactions, and implored the event to go on.
However, the White House correspondents' association president said the event will be rescheduled, though they noted all attendees were safe.
