Queen Elizabeth addresses a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress
Hi there, this is J.P. Tasker. I'm following the King's visit from Washington this week.
The official state arrival ceremony is just beginning now, on the south lawn of the White House grounds. A huge delegation of U.S. And British dignitaries have gathered for this moment.
The United States Army Herald Trumpets, the president's fanfare ensemble, will deliver musical honours once Their Royal Highnesses arrive.
The U.S. Marine Band will then play the national anthems of both countries.
And, as is standard for a visiting head of state, Charles will be celebrated with what the Americans call a "presidential salute"— a 21-gun cannon salute.
Trump and the King will inspect the troops accompanied by the U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps.
Trump will then take the podium and deliver remarks.
The King will deliver his own speech later today during a rare joint session of Congress.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday that the suspect, who has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was likely targeting Trump and officials in his administration.
If law enforcement confirm Allen intended to kill Trump, that would make the event the third assassination attempt against him since the 2024 presidential campaign.
The incident has re-launched the conversation about a rise in political violence in the U.S.
Several lawmakers and other guests attending the dinner Saturday had already experienced political violence, The New York Times has noted.
"It's a dangerous profession," Trump told reporters at the White House, where they gathered after the incident Saturday night.
He later called King Charles "brave" for pursuing his state visit to the U.S. The front page of the U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper on Sunday displayed a picture of Trump, his wife Melania and the dinner's host, CBS News's Weijia Jiang, reacting at their table as they are told about the presence of a shooter.
Beneath, the headline said, "King keeps calm and carries on."
Can King Charles help with U.K.-U.S. Relations?
Vanity Fair royal commentator Katie Nicholl explains what she's watching for as King Charles visits the U.S. And makes a historic speech to Congress.
Tensions over the visit pre-dates the shooting in Washington over the weekend.
There has been friction between the two countries' leaders, leading to criticism of the King's visit in the U.K. And calls for it to be cancelled shortly after it was announced in March.
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey urged the U.K. Government to scrap the trip, warning, "We cannot put His Majesty in that position," and saying he fears what Trump "might say or do" during the visit.
Starmer has pushed back on calls to cancel, defending the role of the monarchy in diplomacy.
He said the institution "is often able to reach through the decades," suggesting the King's visit could help steady relations.
"It's still in Britain's interest not to be confrontational with Trump, that the U.K.'s relationship with the U.S. Perhaps goes deeper than any one particular president."
Trump, for his part, has repeatedly criticized and denigrated the U.K. In dismissive outbursts, targeting Starmer himself — "no Winston Churchill" — the country's armed forces, and what the U.S. President thinks Britain should do about its oil supply as the war hampers global exports.
Trump has also attacked British policy, including a proposed deal over the Chagos Islands, calling it an "act of great stupidity."
Britain was a part of the U.S. War in Iraq in 2003, and Trump has been angered that he didn't receive similar support when the it launched its assault on Iran.
NATO members have highlighted that they didn't receive advance notice of the American plans, while Starmer has allowed U.S. Forces to use British military bases for defensive purposes that result from the war.
Trump and U.S. Vice-President JD Vance have also criticized Britain's energy policies, though Vance's recent assertion that British customers pay several times as much for energy as Americans has been described as inaccurate. Trump's claims that more drilling by Britain in the North Sea would help its energy situation have been viewed as debatable.
Bessent, meanwhile, told the BBC that a "small bit of economic pain" is a worthwhile price given Iran's threat to security, pointing out that Tehran has "mid-reach intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach London."
While British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been praised in some quarters for his handling of U.S. President Donald Trump over the past 16 months, he and other British ministers have gone public with their frustration with the White House.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves criticized the Iran war as "folly," even as she prepared to meet Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other U.S. Officials in Washington last week.
Her comments were part of an interview with the Daily Mirror that was published Tuesday. She posted a link to the newspaper's writeup early Wednesday, saying Britons are feeling the pain from a war not of their government's choosing.
Reeves piggybacked on comments made by Starmer himself in an interview with Britain's ITV network last weekend, in which he said he was "fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy … because of the actions of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin or Trump across the world."
Charles's visit will span multiple cities with a mix of high-level diplomacy and public-facing events.
The trip began in Washington yesterday, where the King and Queen Camilla were welcomed by U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump, followed by tea in the White House and a garden party.
Today, the King is expected to address members of Congress, hold bilateral talks with the president and attend a state dinner at the White House.
Any meeting between the two leaders is expected to be held off-camera, The Guardian reported, in a bid to avoid the potential for awkward situations other heads of state have experienced in the Oval Office.
Midweek, Charles will travel to New York City, where events are expected to include a stop at the Sept. 11 memorial, community engagements, and meetings focused on trade and cultural ties between the U.K. And U.S.
The tour will then return to the Washington area, with appearances including a visit to Arlington National Cemetery.
The King will then head to Bermuda for his first visit to a British overseas territory as monarch.
King Charles is in Washington, D.C., for his first official state visit as monarch to the United States.
As Prince of Wales, Charles visited the U.S. 19 times, including a trip with Camilla in 2005.
The four-day trip is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence and celebrate the "historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship" between the U.K. And the U.S., Buckingham Palace said in a statement in late March.
But it comes as political strain between the U.S. And U.K. Has spilled into public view, with politicians on both sides of the Atlantic trading jabs over the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
Buckingham Palace said it was looking at whether a weekend shooting incident outside the White House correspondents' dinner would affect the trip's "operational planning," but later said it would go ahead as planned.
