City to fix hole Winnipeg woman fell into, with repairs set to start Thursday

The metropolis of lake winnipeg testament start repairing a hole out in the Wolseley area, a few days after firefighters rescued a woman who fell into it and was trapped for about 40 minutes.
Lisa Marquardson, communications co-ordinator with the city's water and waste department, said in an email Tuesday that crews will begin permanent repairs at the site Thursday.
"If I had hurt my ankle or hurt my leg or something happened, I'm sure it would have been a little more shocking than what it was," she said at the time.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service's technical rescue task force set up equipment and a winch to hoist Keilback out.
Marquardson said the hole was due to a previously-removed catch basin and lead. The area had been backfilled with gravel and covered with sod but the lead (a pipe) was not capped, and over time some of the backfill material likely shifted.
A catch basin is a drainage structure to collect stormwater runoff and trap debris. The lead is the connecting pipe that transports water from the basin to a main sewer line or manhole.
After Keilback's rescue, city crews put a temporary cover on the hole and barricades around it.
As a precaution, crews also checked the boulevard on the opposite side of the road — where another catch basin would have been located — and identified a similar condition. Both locations have since been marked for repairs.
Marquardson said there aren't any records of anything like this happening elsewhere in the city in recent memory.
She also said the city will investigate the issue further to see what can be done to prevent something like that from happening again in any other location.
