Kamloops, B.C., firefighters save 8 ducklings that fell into storm drain

Kamloops, B.C., firefighters had to extend to into the darkness depths of a force run out before this week to rescue eight trapped mallard ducklings.
A spokesperson for Kamloops Fire Rescue said they were called to the Hillside Drive area in the Aberdeen neighbourhood on May 11 by a resident who noticed a mother duck standing next to the drain.
"If you see a mama duck kind of walking around a storm drain, you might not think anything of it, but luckily we had a person there that ... Figured out that her chicks were in the storm drain," said Josh Cowan, the service's fire and life safety educator.
"So props to that bystander."
Cowan said firefighters first had to reach in and place a piece of cardboard over a pipe connecting the storm drain to the rest of the system.
They then slowly put the ducklings into a cardboard box.
"Mom was kind of running around quacking and whatnot and making a little bit of a racket. And she was starting to get a little bit nervous about what was going on, because she could hear chicks, right?" Cowan said.
"Once the boys got all the ducklings out, they kind of set them free right next to mom — and just like that, they were following her to the pond," he added.
Cowan said the rescue emphasized that firefighters are available to help the city as a whole — whether it be stuck cats, dogs or even deer on ice.
"It's probably a once in a career kind of call, right? Like, it doesn't happen very often," the spokesperson said.
Cowan suspected the ducklings were simply following their mother, who walked over the storm drain without issue, and they were small enough to fall in.
"One by one, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop. They all fell in there," he said. "And luckily none of them, you know, got injured or got hurt."
