Live updates: With consumer carbon tax officially dead, affordability back in campaign spotlight

Poilievre candidacy in St. John lackland’s on daylight 10 of run

Bonjour! This is Jenna, your morning live page writer.

The consumer carbon tax is officially dead. The ultra-divisive fuel charge, first imposed on Canadian consumers in 2019, met its fate last month when Mark Carney — on his first day as prime minister — signed a directive for it to be removed on April 1.

That came long after Pierre Poilievre made the pledge to “axe the tax” a centrepiece of the Conservative platform, and used it as a common line of attack against the Liberals.

My colleague Abby Hughes has a great story this morning about what the end of the carbon tax means for your wallet. You can read it here.

I’m a digital producer based in Toronto, and I’ll be curating your live updates experience this morning.

We’ll be bringing you all the latest developments and analysis as Day 10 of Canada’s 45th federal election campaign gets underway.
