IMD orange alert stays activeThe Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) initially issued a yellow alert, but later upgraded it to red as skies turned dark and strong winds preceded a heavy spell of rain in the afternoon.As of 7pm, an orange alert remains active for Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to range from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will likely settle around 29.7 degrees Celsius. The region is likely to experience a partly cloudy sky with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, touching close to 60 kmph during the afternoon and evening.Another spell of light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to follow through at night.IMD declares onset of monsoon The onset of the southwest monsoon was officially declared by the IMD on Thursday as it entered the coast of Kerala, triggering the country's four-month monsoon season.Monsoon season normally reaches Kerala around June 1. However, on May 15, the IMD had forecast that the southwest monsoon was likely to set in over Kerala on May 26, with a model error margin of ± four days.In a statement on Thursday, the weather department stated that monsoon had advanced into the remaining parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, parts of the westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep islands, Kerala and Mahe, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the remaining Comorin area, southeast Bay of Bengal and more parts of the southwest, westcentral, eastcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal, HT reported earlier.
