‘Youngster nahi karega, toh kaun’: Veterans defend Army captain after proposal sparks 'security' concerns
SUpport has been growing for the fresh commissioned regular army chieftain, Bharat Bhardwaj, o'er deliberate surrounding his recent proposal to his partner at a passing-out parade ceremony in Nashik — a gesture that got many heartfelt reactions but also online debate over military protocol as well as security concerns because of an Army helicopter visible in the backdrop.Viral videos of the proposal, which took place after the passing-out parade at the Combat Army Aviation Training School near Nashik on Tuesday, showed the newly commissioned pilot in ceremonial uniform going down on one knee on the tarmac before presenting a ring to his partner. His partner signalled acceptance by hugging him, the videos showed. While many online described the gesture as heartwarming, others raised concerns over discipline and the use of military assets in photographs circulated widely on social media.Even as the Army was likely to seek an explanation from the officer over the social media presence of the proposal, several retired senior military officers have now rallied behind the young captain, dismissing suggestions of any serious security breach and criticising what they called excessive outrage.Army captain gets backing by veteransRetired lieutenant general HS Panag said such situations were not uncommon during service and argued that young officers should not be subjected to unnecessary scrutiny.“Dealt with many such issues in service. Went out of my way to protect and maintain the dignity and free spirit of enthusiastic young officers and soldiers. Made it a point to check their confidential reports and redressed them if more rigid commanders in the chain of command viewed it differently. At worst, issued generic letter of avoidance without mentioning names or the incident,” the former officer said on X. Colonel (retd) Sanjay Pande said the moment should instead have been used positively by the Army for recruitment outreach. “The finest picture for Indian Army’s ‘DO YOU HAVE IT IN YOU?’ recruitment campaign. Seizing such rare events for organisations furtherance requires VISION. Someone goofed it up," he said, adding that there still is “time to retrieve”.“No statements, no posts- Just put this poster across India,” he said, sharing the image of the couple that has drawn mixed reactions.Former chief of integrated defence staff Lt Gen (retd.) Satish Dua also criticised the backlash around the viral images and rejected suggestions that the photographs compromised security.“Too much toxicity on social media on this pic of a young Captain proposing in front of a chopper. On many occasions, army equipment is open to public viewing & photography. There's is no security breach. This young pilot lives away from family & friends quite often. Let him be,” Dua said on X Thursday. Lieutenant General (retd) Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon also strongly defended the officer and slammed what he described as “nuktachini [petty criticism]” over a “pure gesture of love”.“You want the young officer to sacrifice his life for the love of the Nation, but you don’t want him to express his love for his fiancée. In the Army we say ‘Youngster nahi karega, toh kaun karega’,” Lt Gen (retd) Dhillon had said on X.“If you can not find a fault in his professional capabilities, don’t do this nuktachini for such a pure gesture of love and belonging,” he added. Dhillon had also argued that Army equipment has routinely been displayed publicly during outreach exhibitions and public events.“Students and non military personnel have clicked pics with it showing pride and love for the Army. So, please don’t bring in the national security angle into this,” he said.Speaking later to ANI, the retired officer reiterated that the proposal did not amount to any breach of discipline.“... After the passing-out parade, a young officer, a helicopter pilot, proposed to his girlfriend or fiancée. The photo went viral with all sorts of reactions coming in. Some called it a breach of discipline, others called it a security issue, while some felt soldiers shouldn’t do such things... But in my view, if we expect a soldier’s patriotism to be so strong that he’s ready to sacrifice his life, then why question his personal love?” he said.“If he expresses love on social media or otherwise, it doesn’t diminish discipline; it just shows a young spirit... I don't think there's any breach here. It was a heartfelt moment, not worth overreacting. We should accept it gracefully,” he added.‘Was woman’s background verified': The criticismThe criticism over the proposal ranged from military discipline to security protocol, with some even questioning whether the woman's background was verified. “Was the identity and background of the woman verified through the necessary security processes? Was prior approval obtained from the competent military authorities for such an act during a Passing Out Parade?” an X user by the name of Neeraj Ranjan, who described himself as a “proud war veteran” in bii, said in a post.“If this relationship was formal and acceptable within the system, then discussions should also include mandatory military procedures such as marriage declaration, marriage certificate documentation, dependent card issuance, Part-II Orders and other administrative requirements linked to recognizing a spouse within the armed forces. After all, it is these formal processes that officially make someone a part of the military family,” he said.Another user, requesting for his views not to be taken negatively, said their concern is more about maintaining the highest standards of military discipline than about the officer's patriotism or professional competence.“My concern is not about the officer's patriotism, character, or professional competence. It is only about maintaining the highest standards of military discipline, security awareness and public perception. If such practices become common, they may eventually create unintended risks rather than motivation,” the comment read. The episode has continued to divide opinion online, with some social media users maintaining that armed forces personnel should adhere to stricter standards of public conduct, while others argued that the criticism was disproportionate for what they viewed as an emotional personal moment for a soldier ready to sacrifice life for the nation.
