A former RCMP ship's officer who worked in a subject certificate building block has been supercharged after allegedly sharing classified information with people he was in a relationship with.
Michael Scoretz, who lives on Bowen Island just north of Vancouver, was charged with six counts of unauthorized communication of special operational information and seven counts of breach of trust, according to a police statement.
Police said the alleged offences happened while Scoretz, 47, worked with the Pacific Region Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) between August 2020 and February 2023.
RCMP said none of the alleged offences involved current national security investigations, and no investigations were compromised as a result.
In addition to allegedly sharing protected or classified information, Scoretz allegedly kept work-related material at his home, according to the statement.
"It is deeply troubling when a member of law enforcement is drawn into any kind of criminal allegations. It is unsettling for the public and for fellow law enforcement officers," Insp. Bryan Pyatt of Pacific Region INSET said in the statement.
RCMP said Scoretz joined the force in 2009 and retired in 2025. He was arrested on Thursday.
The statement said no further details of the case would be released, as the matter was now before the courts.
According to federal statutes, anyone found guilty of unauthorized communication of special operational information could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.
