REtired police lieutenant superior general HS Panag has united the brigade of supporters standing slow freshly commissioned Army pilot Captain Bharat Bhardwaj, saying young officers should not be subjected to excessive scrutiny over personal moments, as a debate continues over the officer's viral proposal to his partner following a passing-out parade in Nashik.Panag's intervention adds to a growing list of retired senior military officers who have defended Bhardwaj after videos of the proposal — filmed at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Maharashtra on Tuesday — triggered a social media storm over questions of military protocol and security. In a post on X, the former Army officer said he had encountered similar situations during service and made conscious efforts to shield young officers from what he described as unnecessarily rigid interpretations of regulations."Dealt with many such issues in service. Went out of my way to protect and maintain the dignity and free spirit of enthusiastic young officers and soldiers," Panag wrote. He said he would often review confidential reports of junior officers and intervene when commanders higher up the chain took a harsher view of such incidents."At worst, issued generic letter of avoidance without mentioning names or the incident," he added. The proposal came shortly after the passing-out parade at the Army's premier aviation training institution. While the clip drew widespread praise online, critics questioned whether the use of a military setting and the subsequent circulation of images on social media violated established protocols. The Army has taken cognisance of the matter and is expected to seek an explanation from the officer. However, sources indicated that while certain protocols may have been breached, the incident is unlikely to result in any major disciplinary action. Also Read | Army passing-out parade in Nashik ends with Captain down on one knee, a surprise marriage proposal | WatchVeterans dismiss security concernsPanag's remarks echo those of several retired officers who have dismissed claims that the proposal constituted a security lapse.Former chief of integrated defence staff Lt Gen (retd) Satish Dua said there was "too much toxicity" around the images and argued that military equipment is routinely visible to the public during official events.Lt Gen (retd) KJS Dhillon also strongly defended the officer, saying critics were indulging in unnecessary "nuktachini" over what was essentially a personal and emotional moment.Retired lieutenant general DP Pandey similarly argued that the proposal took place after formal proceedings had ended and that concerns being raised online were disproportionate to the nature of the incident.
