Dia Mirza had money, fame and success at 24; then she walked away: 'This is not making me happy'
BY the eld of 24, Dia Mirza had achieved what many aspiring actors pass years chasing. She had financial independency, a successful calling, a place of her own, and recognition across the country. From the outside, it looked like she had everything. Yet, behind the glamour and professional milestones, the actor found herself grappling with a question that many people face at some point in life: What happens when success no longer feels fulfilling?Speaking on Soha Ali Khan's podcast All About Her, Dia reflected on a period in her life when she chose to step away from the fast-paced world of films and reconnect with herself. When success stopped feeling enoughIn the mid-2000s, Dia was in a position many would envy. Her acting career was thriving, she was financially secure, and she had built a life for herself in Mumbai. But despite all of it, something felt missing. Looking back on that phase, she recalled, "I don't like what I'm doing. I'm not having fun. I've made money. I'm independent. I have a home I can call my own in a city that now is mine because it's embraced me and I don't have to worry about my bills, but this is not making me happy."The realization led her to make a difficult but important decision. Instead of chasing more projects and greater success, she chose to pause and examine what truly mattered to her. "That's when I realised that I needed to go back to myself. So it was like a homecoming of sorts," she said.Feeling disconnected from her workDia admitted that she increasingly felt uncomfortable with aspects of the industry and the roles she was taking on. The actor described feeling trapped between her personal beliefs and the demands of a profession built around selling ideas, products, and images. She explained that she felt incredibly dichotomous and was conflicted even in many of the parts she was playing because she realized they did not carry the integrity, intelligence, or ethos that she herself carried. She continued by noting that she was not able to embody that spirit in the parts she was playing at some level or another, which left her questioning what she actually stood for. That internal conflict eventually pushed her to reassess not just her career choices but also the purpose behind her work. Why she calls it a homecomingInterestingly, Dia does not look back on her decision to step away from the rat race as a breakdown or a career crisis. Instead, she sees it as a return to herself. The actor explained that since then, she has consciously tried to align her professional choices with the beliefs she holds close. She said that she has been able to integrate the stories that are connected to this value system in some way or another. While not every project perfectly reflects those ideals, she believes the effort to stay connected to her values has made her work more meaningful.A journey that continuesDia Mirza first entered the public eye after winning the Miss Asia Pacific International title and later made her Bollywood debut opposite R. Madhavan in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Over the years, she appeared in films such as Dus, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Shootout at Lokhandwala, Kurbaan, Sanju, and Thappad.Up next, she will star in two Netflix projects, Ikka with Sunny Deol, Akshay Khanna and Tilotama Shome, and Operation Safed Sagar with Siddharth, Jimmy Sheirgill, Abhay Verma and more.
