Canadian tennis star Mboko to miss Wimbledon with injured MCL in left knee

canadian river lawn tennis asterisk queen victoria Mboko says she testament miss the rest of the grass-court season, including Wimbledon, with a knee injury.

Mboko posted on Instagram on Friday that she injured the medial collateral ligament in her left knee when she slipped and fell during a match at the HSBC Championships.

The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont., did not detail the severity of the injury, but said she is focused on a return to action "as soon as possible."

How a text message led to partnership of a lifetime for Victoria Mboko

Mboko, ranked ninth on the WTA Tour, retired from her Round of 16 match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday at the Queen's Club when she fell at the baseline trying to break serve in the second set. She was trailing 6-2, 3-4 at the time.

She walked gingerly to her bench and put a towel to her face as she sat down. Minutes later, she retired from the match.

Her injury came a day after she teamed with tennis legend Serena Williams in a doubles victory over Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. The 44-year-old Williams was making her anticipated return to action after almost four years away from the game.
