There's a heavy security presence stretching quite some distance from the UFC site on the White House south lawn.
The local Metropolitan Police have closed streets to traffic well beyond the fenced-off perimeter of the White House. I haven't seen this much of the area closed to traffic since I moved to Washington last October.
MMA fighters will duke it out on the White House lawn tonight as part of an event organized by the Trump administration and Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Dubbed UFC Freedom 250, the event will feature a main card of seven bouts. It has been billed as part of this year's celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but it also coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump's 80th birthday.
Seats for around 5,000 invited and paid guests have been set up on the south lawn around a specially constructed octagon, underneath a soaring, 28-metre tall, 600-tonne steel arched structure dubbed "the Claw."
The UFC said it had planned to issue up to 85,000 free tickets for fans who want to watch the event on large screens at the south lawn and the nearby park known as the Ellipse.
The event has attracted considerable controversy for its scope, its use of some of Washington, D.C.'s most hallowed landmarks, and its proximity to the president's birthday.
