Girl found safe after Amber Alert, police seek father in fatal Brampton, Ont., shooting

A one-year-old girl has been found safe following an Amber Alert, but police say her father is now wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Brampton, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police first issued the alert around 5 p.m., but it was cancelled about two hours later.

"I can now confirm that the child has been located by police safe and sound," Const. Mandeep Khatra told reporters on Tuesday. "We believe the child was dropped off to family members."

Khatra declined to say where the child was located, but said the girl's 38-year-old father, who allegedly abducted her, is now wanted in the fatal shooting of a woman earlier on Tuesday.

Police said officers were called to a plaza parking lot in the area of Queen Street E. And Airport Road shortly before 2 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle with the child in the back seat, Khatra said.

"So far, we know that there was a female victim who is now deceased involved, this male who is outstanding and the child who was in the back seat of the vehicle. Given the totality of situation, we believe this to be an intimate partner-related incident," Khatra said.

"However, it's still early. We're looking at all different avenues and trying to figure out what exactly transpired. But most importantly, right now we're trying to find the suspect."

He declined to release the name or age of the woman who died.

The vehicle that the suspect is driving is a Black 2024 model Nissan Kicks with Quebec licence plate FRV4520, he added.

The suspect is described as five foot nine, 175 pounds, with a thin build, clean-shaven with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark-coloured hoodie and blue jeans and carrying a black crossbody bag.

According to police in Niagara Region, the suspect is believed to be in the Crystal Beach area of Fort Erie.

People in the area of Prospect Point and Ridgeway Road have been asked to shelter in place. Police said residents should lock all windows and doors and not open their doors for strangers.

Khatra said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him is are urged to call 911 immediately. Members of the public are urged not to approach him or the vehicle.

Investigators are also appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dashboard or surveillance footage, or any information, to contact police.
