Late yesterday, national team coach Jesse Marsch said captain Alphonso Davies will be available to play in today's match. Marsch told reporters the team will see how the game against Qatar goes before determining how to use the star left back.
As you've probably heard and read ad nauseum, Davies is recovering from his latest hamstring injury, which he suffered on May 6 while playing for Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals.
He hasn't played since for club or country, and sat out Canada's opening 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina last Friday in Toronto. In fact, he hasn't played for the national team since March 2025, when he tore his ACL in a game against the United States.
At practice this week, Davies has been seen jogging with his teammates during the 15 minutes that are open to the media.
Excitement growing as Canada hosts Qatar in Vancouver
Fans of Qatar rallied in Vancouver ahead of Thursday's pivotal game against host Canada. 'During the game, we are fighting Canada. After the game, we are brothers and we love Canada,' said one Qatari fan.
It's almost time for Canada's critical second game at the World Cup, against Qatar, which kicks off in Vancouver at 3 p.m. PT.
The Qataris are considered the weakest team in Group B, but their opening draw with Switzerland showed they shouldn't be underestimated. The heavily favoured Swiss could only score from a first-half penalty kick and the Qataris went on to score a shock stoppage-time equalizer — earning, like Canada the day before, their first ever World Cup point.
Under the more forgiving format of this expanded 48-team World Cup, four points (a win and a draw) virtually guarantees advancement to the knockout stage. That means a victory today would not only give the Canadian men their first World Cup win, but also very likely send them to the elimination rounds for the first time. So, yeah, this is a big one.
Last Friday, Canada drew its opening World Cup match with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. Ontario's Cyle Larin scored the equalizer in the 78th minute, sending fans at Toronto Stadium — and at watch parties across the country — into an absolute frenzy.
