The silence over the weekend from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s front bench was both deafening and telling. As supporters of just-elected MP and former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham made the rounds on talk shows and posted social media statements explaining why they thought he should take over from Starmer as prime minister, pro-Starmer voices were notably absent.
Peter Kyle, the U.K.’s business secretary, was one of the few to emerge, saying simply that his boss was aware of the "political realities" of his situation.
No rousing defence of Starmer’s record over the past two years. No boisterous show of support. Not from Kyle nor from anywhere else in the Labour party caucus.
Under the Labour Party’s rules, 20 per cent of the parliamentary caucus — in this case 81 MPs — were needed to trigger a leadership race.
Media reports all weekend suggested Burnham had far in excess of that, making it all but inevitable Starmer’s days as leader were limited.
"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace," he said outside 10 Downing Street in London on Monday.
Starmer had vowed to stay on as recently as Friday, in the wake of the byelection win for Andy Burnham — who was widely expected to make a play for the leadership. But speculation began to swirl on Sunday that Starmer was reconsidering while spending the weekend with his wife Victoria at Chequers, the country residence of the sitting prime minister.
The formal nomination process for the leadership race is expected to begin July 9, but interested candidates can announce their intentions any time now that the 63-year-old Starmer is bowing out.
