A loss was not what any Canadian would've wanted today, especially given the position Canada had put themselves in to potentially clinch first in the group.
Still, the team can be proud of the fight they showed. Switzerland looked like they could cruise to victory going into the second hydration break, but Canada showed fantastic resilience to bring themselves to within one and push for an equalizer.
Canada actually led in a decent amount of stats, helped by the fact that they threw everything at the Swiss box to find an equalizer while the European visitors sat back to defend their lead.
Canada managed more shot attempts (6-13), more shots on target (4-7) and more touches in the opponents' box (14-23). They also accumulated an expected goals total of 1.34, edging Switzerland's 1.06.
Still, the final score reads 2-1 for Switzerland, and it stings given what could've been for Les Rouges.
Canada now gets three days of rest before their Round of 32 game in Los Angeles at noon PT on Sunday. That match will be contested against the runner-up in Group A.
South Korea is currently occupying that position, but that opponent could change to the Czech Republic or South Africa, given how tonight's games go.
Canada will probably hope for a South African upset tonight, given they're the lowest-ranked team in Group A. But that group has been so even that any team could be a challenge for the Canadians, especially away from home.

There's a crazy atmosphere here at Gatherings Resto Bar in midtown Toronto. For one day only, it became the headquarters for the Swiss Club of Toronto.
A few dozen of their members gathered here to watch this game today, wearing the Swiss colours, which also happen to be the Canadian colours.
Now, just to put this in perspective, these are Canadians. Many of them were born in Switzerland and now live in Canada. Many of them have family ties to Switzerland. But all of them were cheering for Switzerland in this.
Obviously, the celebration continues after a 2-1 victory for Switzerland.
For Swiss fans, topping the group is a monumental achievement.
The last time Switzerland finished first in a World Cup group was in 2006, when they topped a group that included eventual finalist France, along with South Korea and Togo.
They'll play their next match in B.C. Place Vancouver, taking on a third-placed team on July 2.
Jesse Marsch spent the final minutes of extra time waving his arms on the sideline, as if to summon a miracle. Canada had their chances, but it never arrived.
After the game, Marsch and his Canada team lingered on the pitch and gathered in a circle before saying goodbye to Canadian fans, knowing that the next chapter in their story will take place south of the border.
Canada's home-field advantage at the 2026 World Cup ends today. The Canadians fall to second in the group and will play their Round of 32 game in the U.S.
Les Rouges will face second place in Group A at Los Angeles Stadium.
That was the opportunity! But Johnston's free header was caught by Kobel.
Moments later, the ball was kicked toward Kobel again. Kobel spilled the ball this time, but Cornelius couldn't capitalize.
Promise David met the long throw, but the header was held by the Swiss goalkeeper.
Canada have six minutes to find an equalizing goal — and they nearly came close as both Derek Cornelius and Promise David rose to meet a threatening cross, but the former couldn't direct his header on target.
Liam Millar picks up a yellow card after making a tactical shirt pull to prevent Switzerland from moving the ball forward.
He's not one of the players at risk of a suspension. That's great for Canada, given he has been electric since subbing on in the second half.
Fans celebrate on Vancouver’s Granville Street as Canada scores first goal against Switzerland
Supporters shouted and cheered in celebration as Canada scored its first goal against Switzerland at B.C. Place on Wednesday.
The crowd just came back to life here on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver. Smoke flares and chanting and people singing O Canada.
