republic of venezuela declares say of exigency o'er back-to-back earthquakes
Back-to-back earthquakes collapse buildings in Venezuelan capital
It was a horrifying and restless night in Venezuela after 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck in quick succession just after 6 p.m. Local time.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency and in an update Thursday morning said 164 people are now confirmed dead, with 971 injured — a substantial increase from a death toll provided five hours earlier.
The epicentre of the first quake was in Morón on the Caribbean coast, but over 160 kilometres to the east in the capital of Caracas buildings crumbled and collapsed. One Caracas resident said the scene she saw "was like a horror movie."
At Caracas's Hospital de Clinicas, staff were asked to double up on the night shift to help treat the injured. Simon Bolivar Airport in Maiquetia, near Caracas, was closed because of damage. Several schools cancelled classes for several days, with some buildings to be used as shelters.
The U.S., which seized and charged Venezuela's longtime autocrat leader in January, leading to the elevation of Rodriguez, said it was sending search and rescue teams and humanitarian assistance. Mexico, El Salvador, Ecuador and Qatar were among a number of countries who quickly said they were sending rescue personnel and aid.
