Unlike some World Cup teams where the players come from various leagues and competitions, Team South Africa, a.k.a. Bafana Bafana, is composed of players who play with or against each other on a weekly basis.

Of the 26 players called up to the 2026 World Cup squad, 19 of them play in South Africa's top league and 16 of them play for one of the best two clubs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The Sundowns are the reigning champions of African club soccer — they won the 2025-26 CAF Champions League, defeating Morocco's AS FAR in the two-legged final. Between 2018 and 2025, they also won eight consecutive South African Premiership titles. They're a consistent powerhouse in African soccer and nearly tied Germany's Borussia Dortmund in last year's Club World Cup.

Their domestic dominance was ended by the Orlando Pirates this year, who won their first league title since 2012 after finishing second for three consecutive seasons. They also reached the semi-finals of the 2024-25 CAF Champions League.

The fact that so many players play for two of Africa's top teams not only shows they have the quality to mix it with Canada, but also that they have a familiarity with each other's playing styles and tactics. The players know their strengths and weaknesses after regularly sharing the pitch as teammates and opponents at the club level.

That's invaluable at a World Cup, especially in the knockout rounds where the teams that advance are often the ones that work the best together as a unit.

South Africa's players appear to be getting in-sync at the right time following that win over South Korea, so Les Rouges cannot afford to take their opponents lightly today.

Team Canada prepares to face South Africa in World Cup knockout game Sunday

Canada finished second in its 2026 FIFA World Cup group following a 2-1 loss to Switzerland. Players were back on the pitch Thursday as they prepare to face South Africa in the Canadian men’s first-ever World Cup knockout match.

Canadian soccer fans, welcome to uncharted territory. For the first time in their history, the men's national team has made it to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

This historic moment in a World Cup full of historic moments for Canada should be cause for celebration. Yet there's been an air of disappointment since Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Switzerland, which meant Canada lost out on playing its Round of 32 (and possibly Round of 16) match in front of a home crowd in Vancouver.

But let's keep some perspective here. The fact that the Canadians ran a talented, organized Swiss team so close should be cause for encouragement. The team is playing with drive and moments of flair and is finding goals from different sources. And, with all respect to South Africa, Canada's opponents today could have been a lot tougher.

So while it's goodbye Vancouver, it's hello opportunity: there's reason to be optimistic that Canada can make it to the Round of 16 — where they would play either Morocco or the Netherlands.
