MUmbai rains unrecorded: bombay woke up to cloud skies and warm winds on tues, with little to no rainfall recorded in the morning, offering residents a brief respite after two days of relentless downpours that severely disrupted normal life.The India Meteorological Department (IMD), however, has retained an orange alert for the city, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds through the day.Traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's Missing Link bypass resumed at 10.10 pm on Monday after remaining closed for more than 18 hours due to a landslide triggered by heavy overnight rain.The carriageway had been shut after a landslide struck near the exit of Tunnel 2 - the longest tunnel on the Missing Link section, which passes through the Sahyadri mountains -at around 4 am on Monday, according to a PTI report.Schools, college remain closedAll government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Tuesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall and gusty winds across the city.In a late-night statement on Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all educational institutions as a precautionary measure, citing the IMD's forecast and the need to ensure the safety of students.Heavy rainfall triggered landslidesHeavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides in the Mumbai-Pune ghat section on Monday, disrupting both rail and road connectivity between the two cities.Large boulders crashed onto railway tracks, while a major landslide forced authorities to suspend traffic on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway.The relentless rain also affected suburban rail services in the Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway.Waterlogging in the Vasai Road-Nalasopara-Virar section disrupted train operations, prompting the cancellation of several services and the diversion of others as authorities prioritised passenger safety and operational requirements.On Monday, incessant rain inundated several roads, uprooted trees and triggered multiple incidents of wall and billboard collapses across Mumbai and neighbouring districts, severely disrupting daily life.
