Public memorial for fallen Montreal police officer to be held at Bell Centre today

Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was crack and killed on June 22 in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood — the same community of interests where he grew up and later chose to police.
A public remembrance will be held today at the Bell Centre to honour Montreal police Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who was killed in the line of duty last month.
A commemorative procession will also take place ahead of the public memorial. It will be broadcast live on the SPVM's YouTube channel starting at 10 a.m.
Benredouane, 34, was shot and killed on June 22 in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood — the same community where he grew up and later chose to patrol.
The shootout also claimed the life of a bystander, Michel Mizrahi, and left another SPVM officer wounded before the gunman was fatally shot by police.
Benredouane's death marked the first time in 24 years that an SPVM officer has been killed on the job.
Montreal shooting leads to national security investigation on ideological violence
Speaking ahead of Tuesday's ceremony, Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher said he was expecting a few thousand attendees, including six former Montreal police chiefs and representatives from other Canadian police bodies.
Dagher said the ceremony will be a chance for SPVM officers to gather as a family and "cry together."
"He was very positive; Mohamed was known as a great partner personally and professionally," he said.
"Mohamed is going to be remembered for the human person that he's been, but also the hero, and for the police officer — the way he behaved on those 911 calls."
Benredouane leaves behind a three-year-old son and a wife pregnant with their second child.
While a private funeral for family and close colleagues was held on June 24, police officials had promised a larger public ceremony to allow citizens and law enforcement members from across the country to pay their respects.
Citizens who wish to join the procession are asked to gather on René-Lévesque Boulevard W. Between St-Laurent Boulevard and Saint-Urbain Street between 9 a.m. And 9:45 a.m. ET.
The City of Montreal created a condolence book for the public, which can be signed at city hall until Friday and will be given to Benredouane's family.
