U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said authorities have arrested about 24 suspects across the United States, Canada and Europe and executed 42 search warrants in Southern and Eastern California.
Prosecutors have unsealed three indictments charging 37 defendants with racketeering, extortion and drug trafficking following a "multi-year investigation into India-based organized crime groups," Essayli said.
Essayli said three criminal organizations "engaged in widespread violence, including targeted killings, extortions and kidnappings," while "flooding communities around the country with massive quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine."
He said the groups specifically targeted members of Indian diaspora communities in Canada and the United States, "routinely extorting these individuals and their family members in India by threatening them with physical harm and death."
Police in Los Angeles are announcing that arrests have been made in connection with an investigation into international organized crime involving U.S. And Canada authorities.
Though police have so far released few details, U.S. News reports say three unsealed indictments filed in Los Angeles point to raids and arrests of suspects allegedly involved in, among many crimes, the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a temple in British Columbia.
Police say they have arrested 24 alleged members of the organized crime groups through a global joint investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported. Of those, eight taken into custody were arrested in Southern California, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.
Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious alleged Indian crime boss, was among those arrested, according to a news release. Bishnoi has been accused of directing political assassinations, murders, shooting, extortion, kidnappings, drug trafficking, human smuggling and other crimes from a jail cell in India.
Prosecutors allege Bishnoi and his childhood friend, Satinderjeet Singh, ordered the June 2023 assassination of Nijjar, a prominent Sikh religious and political leader from India's Punjab state who was living in B.C. He was killed outside a temple in Surrey, B.C. Initials in court documents match those of Nijjar's.
