Throwback: How the ’93 Jays got ready for World Series Game 1

Dodgers infielder Tommy Edman hit a ground ball that Blue Jays third baseman Ernie Clement couldn't get to in time to make a play.

That loaded the bases with Edman on first, Enrique Hernández on second and Muncy on third.

Next up for the Dodgers was outfielder Andy Pages, who struck out.

But the bases remained loaded with two out for Yesavage, as Ohtani returns to the plate.

The Blue Jays rookie failed to follow up a shutdown first inning in the second.

Unable to locate his slider consistently, Yesavage walked lead-off hitter Will Smith, and saw the Dodgers get ahead 1-0 two singles later.

Yesavage has shown a knack for settling in and remaining calm. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, led the majors with 49 comebacks in the regular season.

So, Toronto may be down early but it is certainly not out.

Yesavage walked Dodgers catcher Will Smith to start the top of the second inning.

The next batter, Teoscar Hernández, the former Blue Jays, ground into a force out, taking Smith off the basepaths, but leaving Hernández on first.

L.A. Third baseman Max Muncy then got a single, putting Dodgers on first and second, with one out.

Enrique Hernández then got a single, which drove home Teoscar Hernández to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.

Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk came up to bat in the bottom of the first, with Guerrero on third and Bichette on first, with two out.

Kirk worked Snell to a full count of three balls and two strikes, then fouling off multiple pitches, before drawing a walk himself, to load the bases.

That gave Daulton Varsho the chance to cause some trouble for the Dodgers, but he popped up to centre field to end the inning.

So Snell escapes the inning without any runs coming in to score.

One of the keys to this World Series for the Blue Jays will be to exploit the Dodgers’ biggest weakness — their bullpen.

To do that, they’ll need to force Los Angeles’ starters to work hard when they’re in the game. They did just that in the first inning.

Snell threw 28 pitches, but worked around walks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And Alejandro Kirk, as well as a single to Bo Bichette, to keep Toronto off the scoreboard.

The Dodgers’ lefty had allowed just two runs in 21 post-season innings entering tonight’s start.

The less the Blue Jays have to face him and the more they get to hit against the Dodgers’ bullpen, the better.

The man can just hit! After being out since Sept. 6, with the crowd chanting 'Let's go Bo,’ Bichette delivers.

Dodgers starter Blake Snell got two quick outs, before walking Guerrero in the bottom of the first.

That brought Bichette to the plate for Toronto, for his first at-bat of the post-season. He hit a single between 1st and 2nd base, allowing Guerrero to make his way to third.

Yesavage certainly doesn’t look like the second-youngest pitcher to ever start a World Series game.

The 22-year-old Blue Jay retired the Dodgers in order in the top of the first, striking out Ohtani and forcing Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman into groundouts.

Throughout his rapid rise in the organization, Yesavage has become known for his calm demeanor. Prior to his start against the Yankees in the ALDS, he said he was “built for this.”

That first inning proved it.

Yesavage had a three-up, three-down inning.

Yesavage struck out Ohtani on five pitches to start the top of the first, before getting quick outs from Mookie Betts (who ground out to short) and Freddie Freeman (who ground out to second.)

Ohtani was roundly booed when he was introduced pre-game. But after his first at-bat, Rogers Centre erupted with cheers.

Yesavage, the Jays starter, missed badly for a ball with his first pitch — perhaps some nerves. But he quickly came back with a 95 mph fastball for a strike, and after two more pitches, the Jays rookie busted out his signature splitter for a strikeout to begin the World Series.

One of the keys throughout this series will be silencing Ohtani atop the lineup — just as the Blue Jays worked around Yankees slugger Aaron Judge in the ALDS and Mariners star Cal Raleigh in the ALCS.

Yesavage certainly got Toronto off to a good start.
