Throwback: How the ’93 Jays got ready for World Series Game 1
Clement, the journeyman infielder has been a revelation for the Blue Jays on both sides of the ball all season.
He elevated his game in October, batting .432 with one home run and seven RBIs entering tonight’s game.
Now, he’s given the Blue Jays their first lead of the World Series.
Clement was the first batter that Sheehan faced, and the hot-hitting Blue Jay delivered an RBI single that gave Toronto its first lead of the game — 3 to 2.
After putting runners on first and second, with no one out, Snell had to face Toronto's Varsho.
Snell battled Varsho and eventually hit him with a pitch — a mistake that loaded the bases.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts then went to the mound and pulled his pitcher, who left the game without recording a single out in the sixth.
Emmet Sheehan was coming in from the bullpen for the Dodgers.
This is what Toronto wanted.
Snell, the star left-hander, lasted just five-plus innings, leaving midway through the sixth with the bases loaded, none out and the game tied at 2.
Now, the Blue Jays will get into the Dodgers’ bullpen, which is likely the star-studded squad’s biggest weakness.
It’ll start with righty Emmet Sheehan, who has a 10.80 post-season ERA, facing Clement.
After seven weeks off, Bichette’s return was just about all you could ask for.
He hit a single, made a strong play at second base — a position he was playing for the first time in his MLB career — and drew a lead-off walk in the sixth before Isiah Kiner-Falefa came on to pinch-run.
Bichette has been out with a knee injury since Sept. 6. Even though he’s healthy enough to hit, it seems with this move that he may not be back to full speed on the bases.
Kiner-Falefa, who has had some big hits in Bichette’s absence, will now step into second base and the clean-up role behind Guerrero Jr. In the batting order.
Bichette drew a leadoff walk from Snell, whose 90th pitch of the game put the Toronto infielder on base.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa entered the game as a pinch runner for Bichette and will take his place in the field in the next inning.
Then Kirk was up to bat, hitting a single that moved Kiner-Falefa to second.
Domínguez started the top of the sixth by striking out Teoscar Hernández, who did not appear to like the call that sent him back to the dugout.
The Dodgers' Muncy came to the plate next, drew two balls and then popped up a foul ball, which was caught by Clement.
Then Domínguez struck out Enrique Hernández, completing a clean three-up, three down, inning for the Toronto reliever.
Springer hit a leadoff single off Snell in the fifth inning, bringing Davis Schneider to the plate.
But the potential rally fizzled when Schneider then hit into a double play.
That brought Guerrero to the plate, who fell behind 0-2. He then grounded out to the second baseman.
The score remains 2-2 after five innings of play.
No, tonight wasn’t the rookie’s best outing, but he still made history.
Yesavage’s five strikeouts gave him 27, breaking the Blue Jays’ franchise record for punchouts in a single post-season.
David Price held the previous mark with 23 over four appearances in 2015.
Fluharty mostly did his job, retiring both lefties he faced.
However, he allowed a single to the right-hander Betts in between those outs, and manager John Schneider wouldn’t let him face another righty.
Seranthony Domínguez came in and immediately forced righty Will Smith into a flyout to end the top of the fifth.
Domínguez was acquired from AL East rival Baltimore just ahead of the July trade deadline in exchange for a minor-league prospect.
He was immediately entrusted with high-leverage situations ahead of closer Jeff Hoffman, and he mostly excelled in that role during the regular season and into the playoffs.
However, he is prone to walks — and he was also on the mound when Mariners slugger Eugenio Suarez hit that eighth-inning grand slam in Game 5 of the ALCS.
