Throwback: How the ’93 Jays got ready for World Series Game 1

It was a game plan executed to perfection.

Yesavage, despite some struggles, kept the Blue Jays in it while the offence made Snell work hard, even though it failed to capitalize early.

Then, a combination of power, patience and depth — the Blue Jays’ winning formula all season — took over in a decisive nine-run sixth inning, punctuated by Addison Barger’s pinch-hit grand slam.

From there, the Blue Jays were able to cruise to the finish without using their top two relievers, Jeff Hoffman and Louis Varland.

Game 2 goes Saturday with first pitch at 8 p.m. ET. Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman will take the mound against Dodgers righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is coming off a dominant complete game in the NLCS.

The Jays brought in Eric Lauer to work the ninth. He was Toronto's sixth pitcher to see action in Game 1.

Edman was the first batter for the Dodgers. He popped out on the first pitch he saw from Lauer.

Pages was up next. He lined out to Barger in right field.

Ohtani was back for one last at bat and got on first base after a walk from Lauer.

Lauer tried a pickoff at first, but Ohtani was called safe. (The Jays challenged the call, but it was not overturned.)

Lauer then struck out Betts to secure the Jays' 11-4 win in Game 1.

Will Klein was the fifth Dodgers pitcher to take the mound when he came into the game in the bottom of the eighth.

He faced Springer, who was out on a fly ball to start the inning.

Next up was Barger, who hit a single to left field. Then Guerrero hit a long fly ball to centre to give Klein a second out.

Kiner-Falefa was the third out, also on a fly ball to the outfield.

Toronto pitcher Chris Bassitt came into the game to start the eighth inning.

Bassitt often pitches as a starter for Toronto, but he made two relief appearances in the recent American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners.

To start the eighth, he got a ground out from Smith, the Dodgers catcher, then walked Teoscar Hernández to put a runner aboard with one out.

But he then struck out Muncy and Enrique Hernández to shut the door on the Dodgers.

Not surprisingly, the grand slam home run by Addison Barger sparked a grand slam eruption of fans at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square.

And just when it quieted down for about eight seconds, another home run, this time by Alejandro Kirk, and another giant cheer, although maybe just slightly less intense than the previous.

But it’s been like that all night.

With every base hit, or run scored, the hundreds of fans here have shown their enthusiastic support for the team.

“Electric!” is how fan Christopher Bogin described the atmosphere.

And one of the major benefits of a watch party like this?

“It’s free!” he said.

A starter all season, veteran Chris Bassitt moved to the bullpen for the playoffs.

He’ll enter Game 1 in the eighth inning, and given he is stretched out to throw multiple innings, manager John Schneider is likely hoping he can record the final six outs of Game 1 with relative ease.

Bassitt pitched a strong eighth inning in Game 7 of the ALCS on Monday as the Blue Jays nursed a one-run lead.

This situation isn’t quite as tenuous, but it’s still important for Bassitt to get the job done as Toronto begins to look ahead to Game 2.

The Dodgers brought in Justin Wrobleski — their fourth pitcher of the game — to take on Toronto in the seventh.

Wrobleski got a fly-ball out from the leadoff batter, Clement, to record his first out.

Lukes then grounded out, and so did Giménez.

Toronto held an 11-4 lead heading into the top of the eighth inning.

A few stats:

After surrendering the two-run homer to Ohtani, Fisher went on to strike out Betts for the second out of the top of the seventh.

Then he battled Freeman, who eventually hit a fly ball to Toronto's Barger, securing the third out for the Blue Jays.

Well, this would qualify as the best possible situation in which to allow an Ohtani home run.

The Japanese superstar launched his first homer of this World Series with a two-run blast in the seventh — but all it did was bring his team within seven runs of catching the Blue Jays.

The biggest danger now is letting Dodgers hitters gain confidence, or allowing them to force the Blue Jays to use their best relievers in a game that should be a blowout.

Ideally, closer Jeff Hoffman and reliever Louis Varland stay seated in the bullpen and remain fresh for Saturday’s Game 2.
