The science of a perfect home run
Hi folks, I’m a writer on the live page team based in Toronto. Doug Glanville, a retired MLB player and analyst for ESPN, says having to rely on relief pitchers too early tonight could be “disastrous” for the Blue Jays in this series, though he noted that probably applies to both teams.
“You start to weaken your bullpen early in the three-game stretch in a row on the road, it really costs you in a compounding way.”
The six-foot-eight Glasnow is yet another imposing member of the Dodgers' starting rotation who’s been very tough on hitters in the post-season, where he's had only one earned run so far through 13 and one-thirds innings of work.
He's struck out 18 batters over that same stretch, allowing just seven hits, but also eight walks.
He's delivered for Los Angeles as both a starter and a reliever during the playoffs.
Glasnow, a veteran of 10 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons, was born in August 1993 — just a couple of months before the Toronto Blue Jays won the second of their back-to-back World Series titles.
Tyler Glasnow is the Dodgers’ starting pitcher tonight. Roberts also managed Scherzer when he played in L.A. And laughed when reporters asked about his experience with tonight’s opponent.
"Max. He's one of one. Great competitor. Don't want to touch him during outings, don't want to pat him on the back side," the Dodgers manager said. "[He] wants to be the guy. I really enjoyed managing a future Hall of Famer. He's very smart.
"He's a baseball player first, then a pitcher."
Earlier today, reporters asked Dodgers manager Dave Roberts what his team needed to do to get to Scherzer.
"There's just gotta be relentless at-bats, one through nine," Roberts said.
The Dodgers skipper said that if the L.A. Hitters can keep up the pressure on Scherzer, that's where they'll see success.
"We just gotta be willing to kind of grind him [down], and if we can do that, I like our chances, " Roberts said.
Scherzer previously played for the Dodgers in the final months of the 2021 MLB season and pitched for them in the playoffs that year.
Veteran Max Scherzer will start for the Jays at Dodger Stadium, pitching in the World Series for the fifth time in his career.
"This is what you play for, to be able to get to this spot, to get to this moment, to have a shot at it," Scherzer told reporters before Game 2 at Rogers Centre, according to The Canadian Press.
"I absolutely respect playing in a World Series, what that means, and absolutely cherish these opportunities. When I get a chance to get the ball, man, this means everything."
This is his fifth World Series start with his fourth team. He previously started with the Detroit Tigers in 2012, had two starts with the Washington Nationals in 2019 and one with the Texas Rangers in 2023. The Nationals and the Rangers won the World Series in the years he played.
Toronto Blue Jays face the Dodgers in L.A. Tonight for game 3, series is tied 1-1
I’m a senior writer on the national desk based in Vancouver. We’ll be covering the third game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers on this page tonight.
The teams split the first two games in Toronto: the Jays crushed the Dodgers 11-4 in the first game, but lost 5-1 in the second after an impressive performance by pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Tonight’s game starts at Dodger Stadium at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET.
