The science of a perfect home run

Klein was the last man available out of the bullpen for Los Angeles. Manager Dave Roberts will have to turn to a starter if he needs another pitcher.

Meanwhile, Brendon Little is the last relief arm in the Blue Jays’ bullpen. His last appearance ended in disaster — a homer and two walks, leading to another reliever allowing a grand slam — but he’s all Toronto’s got, now.

Why not, right? We’re now just three innings away from matching the World Series record.

Already, this game has its spot as the second-longest ever.

Edman came to bat in the bottom of the 14th with runners on first and second, and just one out.

He popped up to Kiner-Falefa, giving the Jays another chance to slide through to another inning, if they could record one more out.

Rojas came to bat and grounded out, sending the now more than five-hour-long game into a 15th inning.

It was Lauer facing Smith when the bottom of the 14th inning began.

Smith had a long at bat against Lauer, eventually hitting a very long fly ball that Varsho caught in centre field for Toronto's first out.

Muncy, the next batter, had a prolongued at-bat of his own, which also included a very long fly ball — but that one went foul. He drew an eventual walk from Lauer.

That put a runner on first with one out.

Henriquez faced Straw at the start of the 14th inning.

Straw hit a long fly ball that went to the warning track in centre field, where it was caught for the first out for the Dodgers.

Clement, who was batting for the seventh time in Game 3, fouled off multiple pitches from Henriquez, but ended up grounding out to Muncy at third. The throw to first was close, but Clement was out.

Giménez, in his own battle at the plate against Henriquez, hit a foul ball off his leg that looked like a painful moment during his at-bat. He eventually struck out.

At over five hours, the Blue Jays are playing their longest post-season game ever by time.

The previous mark was four hours 57 minutes in Game 2 of the 2015 ALDS, itself a 14-inning affair.

With that third straight intentional walk, Ohtani is the first player to reach base seven times in a World Series game.

Then the Jays walked Betts, too, setting up a lefty-lefty matchup in Lauer vs. Freeman.

And the huge risk — a walk would have won the game for the Dodgers — somehow paid off.

If we’re mentally drained at home, the players must really be feeling it.

Miguel Rojas pinch hit for Enrique Hernández, in the bottom of the 13th, laying down a bunt to move Edman to third.

Alex Call then entered the game as a pinch hitter for Andy Pages. He grounded out, but Edman could not come home on the play.

That brought Ohtani back to the plate, and the Jays, once again, intentionally walked him, and Betts — a move that loaded the bases.

Freeman returned to the plate for L.A. He flied out to Varsho, for the third out and the Blue Jays stay alive to see the 14th inning.

Lauer went back out for the Jays to start the 13th.

Edman hit a long, leadoff double to start the inning.

That was trouble for the Blue Jays.

After five substitutions for injury or matchups, the Blue Jays lineup looks a lot different than it did in the first inning.

It is also substantially weaker, at least offensively.

The 13th inning, then, with Guerrero and Varsho — probably their best two hitters remaining — unable to spark a rally, might be looked back on as a missed opportunity.
