The science of a perfect home run

Kiner-Falefa had his first at-bat against Ohtani to start the top of the third.

He grounded out to Edman at second base, which brought up the top of the Jays' batting order.

Lukes ripped a liner to right field, which got him to first base, with a one-out single.

The Dodgers scratched across one run in the second — but, perhaps more concerningly, they made hard contact against Bieber, including two long flyouts.

Two of Bieber’s previous three post-season starts lasted just 2.2 and 3.2 innings, so we know Schneider won’t be afraid to pull him if he doesn’t have it.

But the bullpen can ill afford a big lift after last night’s game.

Enrique Hernández fell behind Bieber on strikes, worked to a 2-2 count, then ripped a fifth pitch that went foul down the left-field line. But he hit a successful sacrifice fly on the sixth pitch to deep right field, bringing Muncy home from third.

That gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Pages then hit a fly ball to end the inning.

Edman came to bat with Muncy on base and one out. He hit a ground-ball single to centre field, which moved Muncy to third.

Enrique Hernández came to the plate, looking to bring Muncy home.

Teoscar Hernández was first up for the Dodgers in the bottom of the second. He grounded out to Giménez to give the Jays a quick first out.

Bieber then walked Muncy on four pitches, putting a runner aboard for the Dodgers.

A scoreless second makes it 13 straight innings in which the Blue Jays have not scored. For the most part, they’ve failed to threaten in that time, too.

For the fourth-best regular-season offence in baseball — and the best in the playoffs — that’s a major problem.

Varsho hit a pop fly fielded by the Dodgers' shortstop Betts to give Ohtani his first out of the second.

Clement then grounded out to first base, with Freeman flipping the ball to Ohtani to get a second out.

Giménez came up next for the Blue Jays. He hit a ball to Ohtani, who threw to first to complete the out.

Catcher Will Smith was the fourth Dodgers batter to face Bieber in the bottom of the first. He hit a long fly ball to the outfield caught by Barger for the Jays' third out.

The game was scoreless at the end of the first.

Bieber allowed runs in the first inning in each of his previous three starts this post-season.

That he was able to navigate that intimidating top of the Dodgers lineup unscathed is a good sign for a pitcher whose stuff seems to improve as the game moves along.

Betts came to the plate with Ohtani at first and nobody out in the bottom of the first.

Like Ohtani, he worked to a 3-2 count with Bieber. But Betts then hit a fly ball caught in right field to give the Blue Jays their first out.

Freeman — the homer-hitting hero of Game 3 — came to bat next. He grounded into a force out, which allowed the Jays to get Ohtani at second for a second out, but Freeman got to first.
