'We feel that out here in L.A.,' Schneider says about Jays watch parties
Muncy struck out to start the Dodgers' half of the third, giving Yesavage five strikeouts so far.
But the next batter, Enrique Hernández, stepped up and hit a no-doubt solo homer, which cut the Jays lead to 2-1.
Schneider, who hit a solo homer to start the game, was back to lead off in the top of the third.
This time around, Schneider got to a full count of 3-2, then struck out swinging against Snell on the sixth pitch.
Guerrero followed Schneider to the plate and drew a walk.
Bichette then hit a ground ball that the Dodgers threw to second to get Guerrero, but they weren’t able to turn the double play, and Bichette was left at first with two out.
Kirk struck out to end the inning.
On his way to the watch party at Rogers Centre in Toronto, lifelong fan Ryan Spence said he has high hopes for tonight.
“If it goes anything like Game 1 against Blake Snell, I think we’ll win it. I reckon we’ll probably get beat out by Yamamoto again Friday,” said Spence, who went to his first baseball game when he was 12 years old. “I’m thinking it’ll go to a Game 7.”
The stands are near-full all the way up to the 500s here at the Rogers Centre — but the Jays hit back-to-back homers so quickly in the first inning, nobody had even had the chance to take their seats.
This looks an awful lot like the Yesavage of Game 2 against the Yankees, when he had a franchise-record 11 strikeouts.
The 22-year-old is hitting his spots, mixing in his splitter effectively and seems cool as ever on the mound.
He’s struck out four straight, including all three batters in the second.
The Blue Jays couldn’t have dreamed up a better start.
Yesavage returned to the mound in the bottom of the second inning, still holding a 2-0 lead.
Freeman was the first Dodger at bat. He worked at the plate, but eventually struck out on the eighth pitch.
Yesavage then struck out Teoscar Hernández, for his second out of the inning.
It was up to Edman to try to get something going for the Dodgers, but he fell behind Yesavage in the count before striking out.
Guerrero already set the Blue Jays playoff record with his seventh homer.
Now, with No. 8 tonight, he’s tied for the second-most in a single post-season. (Ohtani also has eight.)
The record is 10, set by former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena in 2020.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is showing some love for the Jays while abroad in South Korea. He posted a video of himself on a run while wearing the team’s signature logo.
It’s all about the Jays, no matter where we are in the world. <br> <br>Let’s go, <a href="https://twitter.com/BlueJays?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@BlueJays</a> 🇨🇦 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WANTITALL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WANTITALL</a> <a href="https://t.co/FHVijoauQa">pic.twitter.com/FHVijoauQa</a>
Snell got Clement out on a grounder hit to short, to start the top of the second inning.
But Barger came to bat next and got on base, via a single to right field.
Kiner-Falefa then popped out in foul territory, for a second out.
Giménez, the ninth hitter in the lineup, came to the plate next, only to strike out to end the inning.
Can he harness his splitter once again?
He threw only 10 of them in Game 1, and his other stuff wasn’t enough to fully stymie the Dodgers.
We saw how effective Yesavage’s splitter could be against the Yankees in the ALDS, when he broke a franchise record with 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
He hasn’t reached that elite level since, but he was sharp in a three-up, three-down first inning, including a strikeout of Betts.
