Teen media is experiencing in time another bump, and some observers say that’s a swelled trade for both teens and adults. That's mostly because Teen Vogue, the site at the heart of the latest media maelstrom, is known for its ambitious political coverage and reliable-yet-trendy offerings.
Earlier this week, Teen Vogue’s publisher, Condé Nast, announced that it would be folding the 22-year-old brand under the Vogue.com umbrella, calling it “a transition that’s part of a broader push to expand the Vogue ecosystem."
“The title will remain a distinct editorial property, with its own identity and mission,” says an article published in Vogue Business.
But onlookers say they aren’t so sure, citing a spate of layoffs as a reason to worry about where Teen Vogue is headed. The company is reportedly laying off six editorial staffers, most of whom identify as women of colour or transgender. According to the union representing them, this continues “the trend of layoffs at Condé disproportionately impacting marginalized employees."
“They say it'll keep operating as its own distinct brand, but we know how these things go,” a former Teen Vogue staffer said on TikTok.
Wintour's exit as Vogue editor-in-chief comes at 'very perilous time' for magazine industry, says Jeanne Beker
Teen Vogue’s politics editor was among those laid off, and the magazine's top editor, Versha Sharma, is stepping down. Chloe Malle, American Vogue's head of editorial content, will take over. (Malle succeeded Anna Wintour on Sept. 1, with Wintour remaining in her role as chief content officer for Condé Nast.)
“The NewsGuild of New York and Condé United strongly condemn Condé Nast’s consolidation plans for Teen Vogue, a move that is clearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine’s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most,” the union said.
The move has indeed raised widespread concerns about Teen Vogue’s ability to continue the dogged political coverage with which it’s become synonymous. It’s “evidence that corporate concentration eliminates innovative ideas and silences voices with less power,” the Roosevelt Institute said in a statement.
The Roosevelt Institute, a liberal think-tank, presented Teen Vogue with the 2025 Freedom of Speech medal earlier this year.
“Teen Vogue has consistently been one of the only media outlets centering the perspectives of young people, and has done so with bravery and honesty,” the statement says. “In a moment where our country is experiencing generational shifts in thinking, we are all worse off without their reporting.”
“Teen Vogue has faced ongoing challenges around scale and audience reach for some time,” the statement says. “Rather than continuing to operate independently, bringing Teen Vogue under the Vogue umbrella allows it to tap into a larger audience, stronger distribution, and more resources.”
The Teen Vogue news has seemingly reverberated throughout Condé Nast. Four unionized employees were abruptly fired on Wednesday after they, along with other colleagues, confronted the company's head of human resources over the Teen Vogue decision and other cuts.
A Canadian expert specializing in girls’ media says the move represents a concerning trend during U.S. President Donald Trump's second administration.
Keller pointed to widespread efforts in the U.S. To censor journalists, academics and late-night talk show hosts like Jimmy Kimmel.
“We can't say for sure, ‘Oh, that's the reason this decision was made,’ but it seems kind of uncanny that at this moment, when this censorship is taking place within media culture, this is also happening within Teen Vogue," she said.
Notably, some of Condé Nast’s offerings, including The New Yorker, Wired and Them, cover LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, the Trump administration and more.
Still, many are lamenting the loss of Teen Vogue as a standalone platform.
“Like many young journalists, Teen Vogue was my first ‘big’ byline,”one writer said in a USA Today op-ed. “I always felt that the ‘teen’ label kept people from realizing how impactful their journalism was.... Shuttering the magazine as an independent brand feels like giving into that — sending a false message that journalism specifically for (and by) young people isn't that important."
The teen-centred publication started out as a celebrity and fashion magazine in 2003, but it transformed into a political powerhouse in the mid-2010s during the first Trump administration, in part because of a viral op-ed, “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America."
The following years were marked by efforts to hire diverse staff, as well as by coverage spanning politics, the climate crisis, Gaza and Black Lives Matter.
“They were engaging in serious journalism, insightful, sharp opinion pieces that — because of the online environment — were able to circulate widely beyond what the typical Teen Vogue reader might be,” Keller said.
There’s also a concern that young people are losing reliable media.
“You can’t find this stuff, necessarily, on TikTok and Instagram,” Keller said. “We have this idea that social media has democratized the internet, but in actuality these platforms are corporate owned, for-profit sites — like magazines, in a way, however, they're run by algorithms."
Social media platforms “aren't guided by journalistic ethics or other kinds of professional standards that journalists abide by — fact-checking, for instance,” she said.
Teen magazines and publications, like the now-defunct CosmoGirl, Tiger Beat and Elle Girl, were once mega-popular. Teen Vogue represents the latest erosion in mainstream teen media.
And yet all of the eyes on Teen Vogue signify that young people have political cachet — more than they’re often credited with, Keller said.
“The shuttering of Teen Vogue suggests that young women’s — including trans women’s and non-binary people’s — political power remains a threat to these institutions of power,” she said. “There’s something there we can think about: What are the other ways that young women, young people can harness this power to make wider change?”
