"At around 6.52 PM, a slow-moving vehicle stopped at the red light. An explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged,” Delhi police commissioner Satish Golcha said.In his first remarks since the blast, union home minister Amit Shah stated that the blast occurred in an i20 car. "This evening, around 7 pm, a blast occurred in a Hyundai i20 car at the Subhash Marg traffic signal near the Red Fort in Delhi. The blast injured some pedestrians and damaged some vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate that some people have lost their lives," said Shah, adding that all angles related to the blast are being probed by teams from Delhi Police, NIA, NSG, and forensic services.Teams from the National Security Guard (NSG), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the forensic department reached the site of the explosion to assess the situation and ascertain the cause of the blast. As the investigation continues, police have detained two men, who are said to have been the previous owners of the i29 car.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have been briefed about the blast and have taken stock of the situation, government sources told HT.As per the Delhi Fire Department, multiple calls regarding a car blast were made around 6:55 PM. They said the footage shows the car, with three occupants, heading from the Daryaganj Market towards the Sunehri Masjid parking lot beside the Red Fort on Shantivan Marg around 4pm.About two hours later, it was seen leaving the parking lot, taking a U-turn near Old Delhi Railway Station, and proceeding towards Lower Subhash Marg.The car bore a Haryana registration number and was last registered to a man in Gurugram, but had changed hands several times in recent weeks, another investigator said.As the investigation continues, the Red Fort has been closed for visitors for the next three days.
