Hudson's Bay department store faces crisis in 1985
The auction is taking place as part of the liquidation of Hudson's Bay's assets. The historic Canadian retailer filed for creditor protection in March and opted to sell inventory, close stores and wind down its operations.
The months-long process has seen the closure of the company's more than 80 stores, in addition to its Saks Fifth Avenue-affiliated locations and layoffs of over 8,000 employees.
Canadian Tire acquired the Hudson's Bay brand, trademarks and intellectual property, including its logos and coat of arms, for $30 million.
Today, Hudson's Bay Company is launching its auction of 27 paintings in its art collection. The paintings were made by some high-profile artists who took commissions for commercial work, including Charles Fraser Comfort, William Kurelek and Maurice Galbraith Cullen.
They depict scenes of the company's — and country's — history, as seen through the glossy eyes of retail's yesteryear. But some of them are literal pieces of history, too. For example, the collection includes a piece by none other than Sir Winston Churchill.
The 1935 oeuvre by the British wartime prime minister portrays a sunny, sandy street in Morocco. It was a gift to his wife Clementine Churchill and not a commission, so it's unclear how it landed into the Bay's hands. It's called Marrakech, and is estimated to sell for at $400,000 to $600,000.
