D.C. Police have not confirmed any fatalities, but said a few minutes ago on X that “officials continue to gather information on this critical incident and will have an update for the community shortly.”
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said the officers who were shot have died from their injuries.
“These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues,” Morrisey said in a social media post.
About an hour after the shooting, members of the National Guard who were standing within the crime scene area stood listening to an update from their colleagues.
It appeared to be quite sombre. At one point, one member put his hand on the back of another member for comfort.
I’m also a correspondent based here in D.C. I spoke with Stacey Walters, a nurse who was in an Uber when the shooting happened.
“I heard 'boom, boom' twice,” Walters said.
“I was looking at my phone [and] my Uber driver says to me, 'Why are all these people running?’"
Walters said when she looked out the window of the vehicle, she could see a group of children running. She then saw police officers running “from all directions.” She heard someone yelling “help,” though she wasn’t sure who.
Not long after, Walters said there was a massive police presence.
There are dozens of law enforcement personnel in sight behind the yellow police tape, including members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officers, the U.S. Secret Service and National Guard.
An officer just came up to tell the numerous media here that we’re going to have to move back another block.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the two guardsmen have been hospitalized with “critical injuries.” He also said a suspect was “severely wounded.”
Police have not yet commented on the conditions of the guardsmen or the person who was taken into custody, but the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department confirmed three people had been taken to hospital.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said U.S. President Donald Trump “has been briefed” on the shooting.
Trump is at his resort in Palm Beach, Fla., ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. This weekend. U.S. Vice-President JD Vance is in Kentucky.
Police are responding after two members of the National Guard were shot in Washington, D.C., this afternoon. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the incident in an online post.
The D.C. Joint Task Force confirmed they were responding to an incident in the vicinity of the White House after reports of the shooting. One person has been taken into custody, according to a statement.
