Tom Stoppard, renowned Oscar-winning playwright, dead at 88

brits playwright tomcat tom stoppard, who won an honorary society grant for the screenplay for 1998’s Shakespeare In Love, has died. He was 88.
In a statement Saturday, United Agents said Stoppard died “peacefully” at his home in Dorset in southern England, surrounded by his family.
“He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language,” they said. “It was an honour to work with Tom and to know him.”
Stoppard was a prolific playwright, with titles including The Real Inspector Hound, Jumpers and Night and Day, a satire on the British media.
One of his most famous plays, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, made Stoppard, at the age of 29, the youngest playwright to have their work staged at the National Theatre in London. The play went to Broadway and had more than 250 productions worldwide over its first decade.
His final play, Leopoldstadt, first performed in 2020, is the story of a Jewish family in Vienna that was inspired by his own history.
In addition to co-authoring the screenplay for Shakespeare In Love, Stoppard wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and earned an Oscar nomination for his work on Terry Gilliam's cult 1985 hit Brazil.
Stoppard had four sons, two from each of his first two marriages. He married his third wife, television producer Sabrina Guinness, in 2014.
